Easily one of the most surprising announcements to come out of the 2025 Game Awards was the early teaser for Arcanaut Studios’ Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. While you’ll have to wait a long time to play Knights of the Old Republic’s upcoming successor, there’s one Star Wars RPG from the fan-favorite era of the series that can keep you busy in the meantime with countless hours of free content.

Having been released all the way back in 2011 during the golden age of MMORPGs, Electronic Arts’ STAR WARS: The Old Republic is one of the unique offerings in the franchise that is completely free to download and play on Steam. While some premium features like certain loot drops or later content are locked behind paywalls, you can still experience an absurd amount of high-quality story content with no entry cost.

Taking place 300 years after the events of STAR WARS: Knights Of The Old Republic 2, SWTOR is a free-to-play MMORPG that allows you to fight for either the ancient Galactic Republic or the Sith Empire of the past in an incredibly expansive war that dwarfs the prequel and sequel eras in scale.

While the outdated visuals and MMO-style gameplay of SWTOR can take a little getting used to, the sheer quality of its storylines, character building, and passionately detailed development of a relatively underutilized era of the Star Wars universe make SWTOR worth checking out for any fan of the beloved sci-fi series.

Offering 8 total classes with several recognizable races to choose from, each class has its own distinct gameplay and unique story that lasts about 30–40 hours in length, offering plenty of replayability outside progressing through the main story through the following options.

Even if an optimistic release window update for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic means you won’t have to sit around until 2030 to play it for yourself, SWFOTOR and the KOTOR remake are still clearly far, far way from being released, making the massive amount of content offered by SWTOR more than worth sinking your teeth into in the meantime.

While classes like the Imperial Agent and Sith Warrior are recommended to start with, thanks to their fantastic narratives and how it explores SWTOR‘s setting, what sets SWTOR apart from other games in the genre comes from the surprising amount of agency in decision-making that the MMO gives you.

Rather than simply being railroaded into the same generic quests, SWTOR has plenty of meaningful choices and morality-based decisions that push you closer towards the dark or light side of the force, with gameplay benefits for each outside of simple roleplaying potential.

Whether you want to play as a Sith with a heart of gold or a Jedi that isn’t afraid to make some brutal decisions, SWTOR does a great job at allowing you to create and play whichever kind of character you want. With plenty of companions, vehicles, and content, SWTOR is easily one of the most exciting ways to prepare for STAR WARS: Fate of the Old Republic‘s release outside the original single-player RPGs.
