Over the years, the Fast & Furious franchise has taken as many twists and turns as its souped up muscle cars do in the movies. Since its inception in 2001, the saga of Dominic Toretto and his family has gone everywhere from the streets of L.A. to outer space, and though the next film in the main series is supposedly the last, it was thought to be preceded by a Hobbs & Reyes spin-off that would help bridge the gap between Fast X and Fast 11. Now, according to regular franchise writer Chris Morgan, that doesn’t appear to be the case any longer.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about Dwayne Johnson’s latest box office disaster, Red One (which Morgan wrote), the subject of Fast & Furious came up. In 2023, Johnson announced plans for a new Hobbs & Reyes spin-off that was set to star himself and Jason Momoa, with the plan being for the film to come before Fast 11, thus providing fans with answers as to what happened to Reyes following the events in Fast X, seeing as how Momoa isn’t expected to show up in the next movie. It’s a lot to keep up with, we know. Now, Morgan says all that is up in the air, and that if we want to know the truth, we should – as he puts it – speak to “greater minds than mine.”

‘Fast and Furious’ Has Been Missing Its Key Ingredient for a Long Time (and It Can’t Get It Back)
The Fast and Furious films are still fun. But a key part of the family is sorely missing.
With production on Fast 11 seemingly already started based on what Vin Diesel shared recently, it appears as if we have all the answers we need, really, and that the expected Hobbs & Reyes spin-off is no more. At least, not in the context that it will come before the final film, which is slated to be released at some point in 2026.
What Does All This Mean for the Future of ‘Fast & Furious?’
Having already penned six films in the Fast & Furious series, as well as the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off, you’d think that Morgan would be in a position to give an answer that has a little more meat on the bones. The information that’s been coming out in regard to the future of the saga has been somewhat contradictory, so it’s hard to pin down what’s true at this point, and how much is really just Johnson throwing his weight around and acting like he’s the saving grace of the franchise.
To further complicate things, Morgan also added that he’s excited to be working on another Fast project involving Johnson, saying, “I can say that I’m working on a Hobbs & Shaw kind of script. So we’ll see where that goes, but I’m excited about it.” Like we said, it’s complicated, because at the same time the Hobbs & Reyes spin-off was announced, The Rock told everyone that plans for a Hobbs & Shaw sequel were on hold. What the heck is going on, man?
Honestly, it’s enough to give us whiplash, and at this point, we just want Diesel and the crew back for one last adventure that’s said to be more like an “America road trip” than the high-octane espionage heists the series has evolved into. Johnson can go pound sand for all we care, because it seems like almost everything he touches these days turns to rubbish.
