Squid Game Season 2 was released today, Dec. 26, 2024, which follows arguably the biggest breakthrough in international television of all time. The first season of the South Korean drama became Netflix’s most-watched series, prompting the platform to bring in many more acclaimed non-English shows. Even before Squid Game, though, Netflix was airing great international series like Undercover, the Belgian-Dutch crime show that led to the acclaimed prequel film, Ferry. While hardly as successful as Squid Game, the franchise developed a fanbase nonetheless, so, of course, there’s now another title — Ferry 2.
The film follows Ferry and Ferry: The Series, which both earned a strong following and became beloved by fans of international crime dramas. While Ferry 2 is becoming another hit in terms of streaming numbers, fans of the franchise aren’t too happy with it and how the movie treats its titular character, Ferry Bouman. One fan of the first film and Undercover, Stef V, wrote on Rotten Tomatoes (in poor English):
“If you liked the previous movie and serie, you better not watch this one. Total different cast (kids) with not good acting skills. The girl that plays Ferry’s nice is realy hard to watch. It is a shame to end in this way. Frank Lammers as Ferry is the only charactar that is a joy to watch, but the storyline and the other actors are of low quality. I enjoyed watching all other series and movie again in the past weeks, to be prepaired to move on with Ferry 2, but the movie makers could have given the movie any other name, as it is a kind of stand alone movie, so I could have saved 1,5 hour of watching this.”

The True Story Behind Netflix’s ‘Ferry 2’ Explained
Netflix’s ‘Ferry 2’ is about a former powerful drug lord being pulled back into crime. The main character, Ferry, is based on a real person.
That’s hardly the only franchise fan that truly hated the film. Netr0pa writes this scathing response to the film on a Reddit thread about how terrible Ferry 2 is:
“Ridiculous movie…. Like cooking mdma in place full of police officers and then shooting each other at the same time inside there?!? And why the hell would Ferry come out of retirement for some nephew who can just free to run away with her boyfriend?!? And yeah sure that the nephew managed to track down ferry better than CIA…. Im speechless how bad this movie is. Nothing makes sense at all. And the big boss bad guy is just way over the top. Some youngster who thinks he is a psycho ‘top dog’ lmao…”
Nearly every other Redditor agrees. “Weakest entry in the Ferry universe. I didn’t understand the motivation of the guy that wanted to kill Ferry and the others. It seemed to me as if they just wanted some irrational evil guy,” writes Federal_Stop_4034, while No-Succotash-8875 writes, “The female actress is awful it’s barely watchable the series was so good but this was a huge let down beside his part.”
Terrible Reactions Haven’t Prevented ‘Ferry 2’ from Climbing the Netflix Charts
With the film climbing Netflix’s global charts, the bitter word of mouth hasn’t prevented people from watching Ferry 2 (and then likely regretting doing so). This week, Ferry 2 is literally the number one most-watched non-English film on Netflix, garnering 6.4 million views with a total of 10.1 million hours viewed.
Ferry 2 was even in the Top 10 movies on Netflix’s American charts, which can be a difficult feat for international films. One week after its release, Ferry 2 is no longer part of the Top 10 in the U.S., which has been dominated by Carry-On for its second week. Other movies in Netflix’s Top 10 chart in America include The Six Triple Eight, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, That Christmas, Kill ‘Em All 2, The Christmas Chronicles, The Forge, It Ends with Us, Our Little Secret, and The Christmas Chronicles 2.
