Kenny Tete has emerged as a new target to fill the right-back slot for the club and reports suggest that Everton are advanced in negotiations. The Dutch international will leave Fulham as a free agent this summer.
Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Blues have a verbal agreement with the player and formal steps will follow to finalise the signing once his contract expires at the end of the month.
At 29 years of age, Tete is a far cry from the Blues’ recent forays into the veteran right-back market (cough cough Kyle Walker). However, the chance to bring in a proven Premier League player for virtually no cost and on low wages is too good an opportunity to pass on. Especially considering the need to sign several players to fill the squad ahead of the club’s first season at their new waterfront stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.
Tete has spent five years at Fulham, where he has been indispensable for the Cottagers. Signed from Lyon in 2020, Tete has made 121 appearances for the club and has scored four goals and registered 10 assists. However, his stay in West London has been marred by injuries.
Kenny Tete’s injury record
The Dutch international’s first season at Fulham was less than stellar as he missed 22 matches due to a calf injury and coronavirus as the Cottagers got relegated from the Premier League.
He missed 16 games during the 2021/22 season but helped his side win the Championship and earn their ticket back to the top flight.
Tete was out for a month the following season after sustaining a knock and missed six matches during that period.
During the 2023/24 season, he had groin and achilles tendon problems, which caused him to miss 10 matches.
Last season, Tete missed 19 games due to a knee injury and was out for half of the season.
While the injury record may cast a shadow of doubt, signing Kenny Tete as a free agent has virtually no downsides. He is fantastic at reading the game, wins most of his defensive duels and his consistency is unbelievable. He’s also of the right age and if the signing doesn’t work out, will reserve resale value.
Tete might have played more than 25 Premier League games in a season just once during his five years at Fulham but when available, he has been nothing short of spectacular. In fact, the Blues could use several more deals like this to bolster and add depth to the squad while saving money to buy talented forwards who will make a difference.
The right-back slot was a real headache last season. Having 39-year-old Ashley Young and 36-year-old Seamus Coleman didn’t help, as the latter spent most of the season on the sidelines. Nathan Patterson was also not up to the task, leading Moyes to deploy Jake O’Brien as a makeshift right-back during the latter stages of the season.

When you say he has been at Fulham for 5 years and has been indispensable you mean he had a 5 year contract and while it may not have been his fault has missed about half of each season due to injury?

Spooky. Only talking about Ajax academy players on here recently.
Big IF over his fitness.
But beggars cant be choosers.
Patterson is not in the frame of this manager either it appears.
Lets see if this happens.
If it does then its good news

The injury he got last year was due to a bad tackle by Joe gomez which can happen to anyone.
He’s a massive improvement on O Brien and Patterson as a right back.

He’d come in and be a good first choice straight away and with O’Brien as back up (as well as Coleman, Patterson and Garner) we’d have cover for him.
Stating the obvious here but given how many players we need to sign to get a good RB on a ‘free’ that could sort the position out for 3 seasons (injuries permitting) would be a great bit of business and allow us to spend more money in some of the other problem areas.
I’d be delighted if we signed him.

We might only need or use him as a squad player depending on formations/fitness/rotation/form anyway and I highly doubt he’d be on the same wages as someone like Kyle Walker. Even if he’s only fit for 20 odd games, it still represents an improvement on our RB options over the last few years. And we need numbers.
Although I still hold out hope that Patterson could finally do something, I think we all know that isn’t happening in reality.

We need a right back, though I still think Patterson is potentially decent, so, we take a chance on this guy. That’s where we are now.

You can’t hold something against a player for getting injured, especially if taken out by a shit house tackle. Adrian Heath, Seamus Coleman, there are probably more. And then Covid. Something the player had no control over.
I obviously never know, but I can see Patterson being retained. For the right back berth, and if Tete happens,, that’s Tete, Patterson, possibly Dixon, with O’Brien as an option. The defence is looking fine.
If we get this done, we can move on to other areas of the squad.

Tete wasn’t even close to being the best defender on his own club, not with Robinson and Bassey around. Statistically he’s one of the top defensive fullbacks in Europe for tackles and interceptions per game, but he’s not a contributor in attack.
Si, he’s missed 51 games in the last four seasons. Not half, certainly, but not exactly a stellar record of durability.
Ryan and Lee, the knee injury (which was a clash with Gomez, not a bad tackle) isn’t my concern. What bothers me is all the muscle injuries. Groin, thigh, calf, hammy… six in six years. They tend to recur as you get older.

IMO Tete is a squad player, and full backs have become one of the most important positions these days but we need cover for both FB positions so I really hope we get more than Tete.
I know Jake did a real good job there but with Tarks injured and Jarrad’s potential injuries I see him as CB cover or even first choice.
The problem is we need so many players and it is ok to identify who or what type of player you need but it is a different matter landing them

Oh, and “saving money to buy talented forwards?” How many strikers does he think were going to sign, while ignoring the one position, winger, every person on TW agrees is top priority. These articles are becoming a total joke.
At least the mostly intelligent comments remain.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather sign someone like Denzil Dumfries, but we’re not in that space right now.
I agree with you, Jake will likely still feature more as a centre back. As I mentioned previously, with this addition, if it happens, would be an addition to cover in that position.

We need around 5-6 free transfers in order to spend money on 3-4 decent forward players.
Youre generally right about the way these articles are written though. I can only assume theyre non-Evertonians who think that ‘optimism and enthusiasm sells – how little they know about our mentality.
Andy – I also think that Patterson is potentially decent and am surprised at his treatment thus far.

But given our limited options at RB, along with budget/PSR concerns, then I’m quite happy to take a chance on an experienced PL player like Tete on a ‘free’ transfer. Its a gamble but so is every signing, to a degree.
I still fancy Walker-Peters as a squad player too, his fitness record is very good from what I’ve read online. He provides cover at both full back positions and is just turning 28 yrs old so should be good for a few years or at least a small fee if things don’t work out.
