The Mandalorian and Grogu have released a new trailer, one that has certainly won fans over following the disappointing teaser. While the film’s plot remains a mystery, The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s latest trailer gives a better sense of the story’s scale and explains the transition from streaming to the big screen. Peppered throughout the teaser trailer are a variety of returning characters and aliens from past Star Wars adventures.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will not only have characters from The Mandalorian, but the trailer has shown returning characters from The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Book of Boba Fett, and a few alien species seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Rise of Skywalker, and the original Star Wars. Here is a breakdown of every returning character and alien species in the latest trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, not including the title characters, of course.
The Hutt Twins
The Hutt Twins were first introduced in The Book of Boba Fett. Following Darth Vader’s slaughter of the Hutt Council in the War of the Bounty Hunters comic arc and Jabba’s death in Return of the Jedi, the Hutt Twins appear to be the new rulers of the family’s criminal empire. Having previously ceded control of Tatooine, the Hutt Twins now appear to be on their home turf, likely the planet Nal Hutta.
Rotta the Hutt
Rotta the Hutt is the son of Jabba the Hutt and was last seen as a baby in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In the three decades since being rescued by Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker, Rotta has grown up and appears to be serving as a gladiator. He is a much more muscle-bound Hutt than what fans are used to seeing, and he looks like he will be a physical threat to The Mandalorian. Rotta is set to be voiced by The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White.
Chess Piece Aliens
Alongside Rotta in the gladiator ring appear to be a series of aliens. These aliens are a direct reference to the species viewed on the holoboard chess game played by Chewbacca and R2-D2 in Star Wars, and later appeared in The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker. Whoever is running this intergalactic fight club seems to want to have their own lifelike version of a chess battle play out, though the trailer shows these creatures will eventually break out and make it onto the streets.
Dragonsnake
Where Jabba the Hutt had a Rancor, it seems like the Twins have their own trap door monster: a Dragonsnake (one word, not two). Dragonsnakes are large serpent-like creatures that inhabit swamp planets such as Nal Hutta and even Dagobah. A Dragonsnake made its first canon appearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode “The Hunt for Ziro,” where one almost ate Obi-Wan Kenobi. This certainly lends credence to the idea that a good portion of The Mandalorian and Grogu will take place on Nal Hutta and possibly its criminal moon, Nar Shada.
Hugo the Ardennian
At one point in the trailer, Din Djarin tells an Ardennian shopkeeper he is looking for a Hutt, only for the four-armed alien to close up shop. Ardennians first appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story, with the character of Rio Durant being voiced by The Mandalorian and Grogu director Jon Favreau. The Ardennian in The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer is voiced by none other than legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Scorsese is a close friend of Star Wars creator George Lucas, and previously cast Jon Favreau in The Wolf of Wall Street. The shop appears to be named “Hugos”, suggesting that it is the character’s name and a reference to Scorsese’s 2011 film Hugo.
Anzellans
Even though The Rise of Skywalker is a controversial film among Star Wars fans, it appears that the one thing everyone liked was the inclusion of the Anzellan species, specifically Babu Frik. The Anzellans returned in The Mandalorian Season 3, having a shop on the planet Neverro. The little aliens will return once again in The Mandalorian and Grogu, and seem to be working closely with Grogu to rescue Din Djarin.
Zeb Orrelios
Garazeb ‘Zeb’ Orrelios was one of the first new Star Wars characters following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, debuting in the 2014 animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Zeb is a Lasat, whose species was designed based on an original Ralph McQuarrie sketch for Chewbacca. Zeb made his live-action debut in a cameo appearance in The Mandalorian Season 3.
However, he was notably absent from Ahsoka, which featured the live-action debut of many of his former crewmates of the Ghost, including Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, Chopper, and Ezra Bridger. Zeb teaming up with The Mandalorian will likely set the stage for a full-blown reunion between the Rebels characters in either Ahsoka Season 2 or the planned crossover film between the Disney+ series. Zeb will once again be voiced by Steve Blum.
Embo
Easily the biggest reveal of The Mandalorian and Grogu was the appearance of Embo, a Kyuzo bounty hunter. Embo made his debut in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 2 episode “Bounty Hunters”, which aired in March 2010. Embo was originally set to be killed off in his debut episode, but Dave Filoni saw potential in the character and kept him around. Embo would appear throughout The Clone Wars series and was even set to appear in an unmade Boba Fett/Cad Bane-centric episode that seemingly became canon with The Book of Boba Fett.
What is interesting about Embo’s inclusion in The Mandalorian and Grogu is where it fits into the franchise’s timeline. The Star Wars comics establish that by 9ABY (After the Battle of Yavin), Embo had retired from bounty hunting and lived on a farm on planet Felucia. Yet with The Mandalorian and Grogu taking place a few years after his retirement, something has drawn Embo back to the hunt. Could it be a debt owed to the Hutts? A personal vendetta against Din Djarin? Whatever the case, Embo will not die at The Mandalorian’s hands, as Star Wars Adventure Comics revealed the character is alive in 34ABY, two years before the start of the sequel trilogy.
