‘Hacksaw Ridge’

An epic biographical war film, Hacksaw Ridge tells the story of World War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield) who served during the Battle of Okinawa. A conscientious objector who refused to kill people, he went on to become the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without having ever fired a shot.

Remembered for his bravery and incredible regard for human life, Doss’s upbringing and religious beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist are credited for his unwavering values. An inspiring tale, the film includes performances by Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, Vince Vaughn, and Richard Pyros. Hacksaw Ridge is streaming on May 1.

‘Once’

Written and directed by John Carney, Once is a romantic musical starring Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová as two struggling musicians living in Dublin, Ireland. The film is a beautiful tale about a busker and an immigrant, only known as Guy and Girl, who spend an eventful week writing, rehearsing, and recording songs that chronicle their love story.

Heartwarming, charming, and utterly captivating, the film is a cinematic treasure that audiences will undoubtedly adore. Brimming with amazing music, the movie’s original songs were composed and performed by Hansard and Irglová, who went on to win Best Original Song at the 80th Academy Awards. ‘Strangerland’

A suspenseful drama set in Australia, Strangerland follows Catherine (Nicole Kidman) and Matthew Parker (Joseph Fiennes), who live in the remote desert town of Nathgari with their two teenage children, Tommy (Nicholas Hamilton) and Lily (Maddison Brown). After their kids mysteriously disappear just before a massive dust storm engulfs their town, a local cop named David Rae (Hugo Weaving) leads the search to find them.

However, it quickly becomes obvious that something awful might have happened to the Parker children. As suspicion and disturbing rumors about their past spread across the town, public opinion turns savagely against the Parkers. As a result, they’re forced to face the mystery of their children’s fate alone. Strangerland is streaming on May 10.

‘The Last Showgirl’

The Last Showgirl follows a middle-aged Las Vegas showgirl named Shelly (Pamela Anderson) who learns Le Razzle Dazzle, the revue she’s been performing in for 30 years, is set to close its doors for good. As she confronts an uncertain future, she reflects on the sacrifices she’s made throughout her career, along with the happiness she’s experienced because of it. However, in the face of such reflection, she’s forced to grapple with the reality of her age and her place within an industry that thrives on youth.

A story of resilience, the film explores Shelly’s complex relationships and showcases an authentic story that lies beyond the glitz and glam of Sin City. With award-nominated performances by Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Jason Schwartzman, Billie Lourd, Brenda Song, and Kiernan Shipka, The Last Showgirl is certainly a film audiences won’t want to miss.
