When it comes to new streaming titles, HBO Max may very well have the best new lineup for September for those with a wide range of tastes. Notably, the platform sees an influx of new, acclaimed anime titles, including three movies by Makoto Shinkai. Alongside the new anime additions, HBO Max is adding many classic titles dating back to the 1940s. Finally, the platform sees not one, but two A24 films making their streaming debut, for those looking for highly engaging and polished cinema.
With over 70 new films being added to the HBO Max catalog, we’ve highlighted the must-watch titles. Below that, you will find a complete list of all movies coming to the streaming platform for September 2025.
‘Ghost Cat Anzu’ (2024)
Available for the First Time on Streaming September 1
11-year-old Karin is forced to grow up fast when her father abandons her at a rural Buddhist temple. Yet, Karin soon finds a companion in a large ghost cat named Anzu, who can talk and is even employed in random jobs around town. Anzu decides to help Karin however he can, introducing her to the various wonders of countryside living, and even taking her into the world of the dead to try to help her find closure over the death of her mother.
Ghost Cat Anzu is a visually stunning, painstakingly constructed animated feature, using the process of ‘rotoscoping,’ which uses live action footage and tracing on top of it to bring a more lifelike movement to the characters. As a co-production with France, the anime certainly brings the best of both countries’ aesthetics, making it a one-of-a-kind visual experience. Steeped in Japanese folklore, delivering a heartwarming story with touches of absurd humor and an adorable cat, it ensures fans of animated movies will find something to gravitate towards. Ghost Cat Anzu is available to stream on September 1.

‘Dog Day Afternoon’ (1975)
Available to Stream September 1
Inspired by actual events, Dog Day Afternoon follows two bank robbers, Sonny Wortzik (Al Pacino) and Sal (John Cazale), who find themselves at a loss after a series of events causes their clean plan to spiral. The result is a long standoff with the cops, but as the events drag on, Sonny becomes an unlikely antihero to the people, who come to support his fight against a corrupt system.
Decades later, Dog Day Afternoon is still considered to be one of Al Pacino’s best performances, which speaks volumes when considering the actor’s long, rich career. An emphasis on realism and continual build-up of tension is masterfully handled, with Pacino’s unlikely, flawed hero being a fascinating focal point. The Sidney Lumet feature remains a beloved classic, and one that should be watched at least once if you are a cinema fan. Dog Day Afternoon is available to stream on September 1.
‘Friendship’ (2024)
Available for the First Time on Streaming September 5
Craig Waterman (Tim Robinson) is a socially awkward adult whose interaction with others never goes beyond his family or his limited dealings at work with those employed under him. This changed with a chance meeting with a local meteorologist, Austin (Paul Rudd), who moves into the neighborhood, and the two become friends. After an awkward meet-up with others, however, Craig is soon expelled from the friend group and begins an obsessive decline as he tries to recapture the feeling of belonging he had never felt before.
Friendship brings the awkward cringe-comedy of Tim Robinson and the charm of Paul Rudd to the screen in a way that is utterly infectious and entertaining, even when things get out of hand. The Andrew DeYoung feature opts for hilarious predicaments with eccentric characters as opposed to delivering constant jokes, making for a more reserved and deeper comedy gem. Exploring the ins and outs of male friendship makes this an ideal movie to watch with the ‘bros,’ even if the tagline, “Men shouldn’t have friends,” says otherwise. Friendship is available to stream on September 5.

‘Warfare’
Available for the First Time on Streaming September 12
With a focus on immersion, Warfare drops viewers right into the middle of the war as a Navy SEAL mission in Ramadi, Iraq, goes sideways. Co-directed and co-written by Alex Garland and former Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza, the film aimed to recount Mendoza’s experiences and give audiences a unique insight into the harrowing battles faced by America’s armed forces.
A candidate for one of the greatest war movies ever made, Warfare‘s brutal realism has made it a difficult watch for some, but one that is equally eye-opening to the horrors of war. Julian Roman’s review for MovieWeb highlights how the feature effectively cuts to the chase to deliver an authentic viewing experience, stating, “Warfare is a visceral cinematic experience that gets granular in every regard. Mendoza and Garland aren’t trying to entertain via a three-act structure. The operation is the film from start to finish.” Warfare is available to stream on September 12.
