Every Anime Series Releasing in May 2025

As we enter a mid-season for anime releases in May 2025, there are no new titles to announce, though the Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory/Premature Death movie debuts in Japan at the end of the month. This does not mean there is no great anime to look forward to, with many new series and seasons debuting in April, carrying over into new episodes this month. This includes popular ongoing series like One Piece, My Hero Academia, Fire Force, and Wind Breaker, alongside new series like Lazarus, Moonrise, and Kowloon Generic Romance.

Below are our top three choices for the series you need to catch up with or check out for the first time. At the end of the article, we will also list an ongoing series in May that you may want to check out. May 2025 may not have new titles, but these three will keep our anime addiction going throughout the spring months!

‘One Piece: Egghead Arc’ (2024)

The ‘Egghead Arc’ of One Piece sees the Straw Hat Pirates arrive at a futuristic island known as Egghead Island. Here, they meet Dr. Vegapunk, whose advanced technology and research lead the crew to unveil more about the various mysteries they have encountered, particularly the Void Century and Poneglyphs. The most recent arc has been exciting for longtime fans, offering a deeper dive into the series’ lore and a new setting with new technology at the center of its story.

While it is unlikely that anyone will be jumping onto One Piece directly into this arc (you may want to catch up on the thousand-plus episodes first), the most recent arc has been a fan favorite and is a testament to the continued growth of the series. Four new episodes in the arc, which started all the way back in January 2024, are set to release this month with simulcasts on Crunchyroll and subsequent releases on Netflix the following week after they debut.

‘My Hero Academia: Vigilantes’ (2025)

The popularity of My Hero Academia has led to the recent spin-off, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, which takes place five to six years before the original series, given a new protagonist in Koichi Haimawari, a college student with a modest “Sliding Quirk” who becomes an unlicensed vigilante alongside a street performer who goes by Pop Step and a mysterious fighter known as Knuckle Duster. While battling street-level crime, the three come across a dangerous and powerful character, a drug dealer named Trigger, who has a madness-inducing ability.

10 Best Anime Series Currently Streaming on Netflix

With Netflix continuously investing and acquiring, the list of great anime on the streamer is getting really impressive.

As a complete stand-alone series, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes will still offer depth and Easter eggs to returning fans. Younger versions of established heroes like Eraserhead and All Might are a true treat to see, and much of the world is already established. Still, Vigilantes can act as a jumping-off point for those wanting an action anime with a bit more grit and maturity than what was on offer in the popular Shōnen series previously. Four new episodes of the April 2025 anime will be available to stream on Crunchyroll via simulcast.

‘Kowloon Generic Romance’ (2025)

Real estate agents Reiko Kujirai and Hajime Kudou work in a romanticized version of the historic Kowloon Walled City. Reiko, who has feelings for Hajime, also suffers from memory loss, with much of her past blurring with the present. As she learns about her true nature and the truth behind the massive walled city, she struggles and grows into the person she wants to be while building a relationship with the tentative Hajime. Romance, sci-fi, mystery, drama, Kowloon Generic Romance is a complex story aimed at a mature audience.

While Shōnen anime will always reign supreme, mature content for those looking for more complex themes is always welcome. Kowloon Generic Romance has had a lot going for it since its debut in April 2025, from its setting being based on the real-life wonder that was Kowloon Walled City in China to it’s a throwback to the golden era of anime with a dreamy romantic tint to its brilliant integration of light sci-fi elements into an engaging tale of romance; the manga on which it is based developed a cult following for the same reasons.

If you have yet to check out this series, Kowloon Generic Romance is easily the unique and contemplative new series of 2025 so far. New episodes of Kowloon Generic Romance are available via simulcast on Crunchyroll.
