Even More ‘Stranger Things’ Spin-offs Are on the Way

The original Stranger Things came to an end this week, though fans have braced themselves for more projects being developed in the future, yet creators Matt and Ross Duffer still managed to unceremoniously confirm there’s more for the franchise’s future than previously revealed. Expectedly, the filmmakers failed to offer any insight into what these upcoming projects will explore, yet this recent reveal will give fans of the franchise even more to speculate about in the coming months and years.

In addition to the previously announced live-action spin-off and the animated Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, the brothers teased to Entertainment Weekly that yet another expansion is inbound. Matt Duffer revealed:

“To us, it’s just one step at a time. Right now, everything you said is all we have planned … Well, there’s one other thing I can’t talk about, so I just sort of lied to you, that is also really cool. But the live-action spin-off is what the main focus is right now. I wish I could talk about it more, but we have a specific idea or philosophy for how the show and the Stranger Things universe, if you wanna call it that, can continue. It’s very different, I would say, than something like Game of Thrones or Star Wars, because we’re just not like that.”

Stranger Things has already expanded into other media, having offered fans comic books and novels, in addition to a stage play. Even if the Duffers didn’t explicitly address this additional spin-off, by specifying Tales from ’85 and referring to the previously known spin-off as “the live-action spin-off,” theories have sparked about what this latest expansion will be.

Something the creators did tease about the mythology, however, is that the stage play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, and Tales from ’85 will definitively tie up all of the lingering questions viewers might have about the proper series and that upcoming installments will push the mythology forward. Ross Duffer detailed:

“And we’re very proud of Tales from ’85 and the play, but those are mining the last remaining small gaps in the narrative that we told over the course of Stranger Things. So to be able to move forward, we have to build out a new mythology because otherwise we’re just gonna keep finding these little narrow gaps and it’s just gonna get narrower and narrower and more forced. So the goal is to break it wide open and do something very new and very different.”

Matt Duffer added, “I have to say, it has been so fun just creating new characters and a new mythology, just because you’re starting from the ground floor. It’s exhilarating, and I can’t wait to say more about it when I’m allowed to, but Netflix PR is listening in.”

The content of these spin-offs isn’t the only thing fans are curious about, as we also don’t know how long any of these projects will take to come to fruition and how much enthusiasm will still be left in the fandom. We know that Tales from ’85 is expected to debut this year, but that’s about it. Even with how much passion there has been for Stranger Things, we only got five seasons over the course of a decade, so this could just be the beginning of an all-new franchise or we may have already seen the beginning of the end of the mythology.
