One of the stars of the second most panned MCU movie is hoping to return to the Marvel franchise, whether that be in a sequel (unlikely) or another project (possible). Speaking with Comicbook.com, Eternals star Gemma Chan
is holding out hope that the story is not over for her character, Sersi, and the rest of the Eternals, a group of superpowered, genetically engineered beings created by the Celestials.
Released back in 2021, Eternals saw Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao take the helm of this MCU outing, which introduced audiences to the titular characters and their war against their ancient counterparts, the Deviants. A war that has lasted thousands of years. Unfortunately, despite the potential of the director, cast, and story, Eternals seriously faltered with critics, landing a “rotten” score of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and thus making it the second-lowest rated installment in the MCU. Just above Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’s 46%.

MCU Rumor Suggests 2025’s Big Oscar Winner Could Be Joining ‘Spider-Man 4’
The MCU is always keen to enlist the services of some of Hollywood’s biggest Oscar-winners, and a fresh recipient could be next.
Despite stumbling out of the gate, Gemma Chan is hopeful that the Eternals will return, with the actor feeling like there’s “unfinished business” and a lot “more story to tell.”
“You never know. We’re often the last people to find out. I don’t know, I’m keeping the faith. I feel like there’s unfinished business there and there’s more story to tell, but we’ll see.”
Could the Eternals Return in the Upcoming ‘Avengers’ Sequels?
Gemma Chan is right in saying that there’s unfinished business, with Eternals teeing up several new developments in the MCU. Not only did the movie end with the titular group being used by the Celestials to judge whether humanity is worth sparing, a mid-credits scene introduced pop star and Dunkirk’s Harry Styles as the brother of Thanos, Eros, AKA Starfox, while a post-credits scene finds Game of Thrones star Kit Harington’s character Dane Whitman finding the powerful Ebony Blade and treated audiences to the sound of Mahershala Ali as Blade. So far, none of this has been resolved.
Initially, it was expected that Eternals 2 would go into production. However, following the poor critical response alongside a lukewarm box office return, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige put these plans on hold, saying last year that there are “no immediate plans” for a sequel.
“There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2. There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in a trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Certain giant things came out of the ocean.”
While the Eternals may never again lead their own movie, there are plenty of opportunities for at least some of the characters to return to the MCU. The most recent big screen outing, Captain America: Brave New World, finally brought the body of the dead Celestial, Tiamut, into the fray, meaning that the franchise is not avoiding the Eternals mythos entirely. The upcoming Avengers sequels, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, are also expected to be brimming with characters and cameos from across the MCU’s history. Making it most likely that, should Sersi return, it will be one of the Russo Brothers’ upcoming blockbuster behemoths.
