After a week full of twists and turns on the striker front, it finally feels like we’re nearing a conclusion regarding Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike’s futures.
The bad news for us is that Ekitike is heading to Liverpool, but the very fact he’s Anfield-bound is a sign that the Reds have accepted defeat and will not be landing ‘top target’ Isak anytime soon.
Back in Austria, where Eddie Howe and the players have been training in a behind-closed-doors camp surrounded by the Alps, new signing Anthony Elanga has been asked about his Swedish teammate and week-long links with a move to Liverpool.
Reacting to Liverpool’s £120m approach and all of the Isak rumours, Elanga’s had this to say when speaking Sky Sports’ Keith Downie:
“A player like Alex, he is one of the best strikers in the world and we all (the squad) want to play with him (next season).
“I have played with him at international level so I can say that he’s top.
“There is always going to be rumours (about him leaving), but training with him and playing at international level with him has been amazing.”
After sealing a £55m move rom Nottingham Forest last Friday, Elanga has also been discussing his first full week at the club, speaking highly of the team and how he’s settled in:
“You look at this team, I could go through them all. I’ve been here for a week and feel like it’s been forever.
The 23-year-old winger is clearly settling in nicely and will be in the squad for the very first time this weekend, where we travel to Glasgow on Saturday to face Celtic in the Adidas Cup.
As for Isak, it feels clear that Liverpool have lost hope, opting for Ekitike instead, much like Arsenal who have been forced to look elsewhere in Sporting Lisbon’s Vitkor Gyokeres.
