Edgerunners’ Teases Major Season 2 Announcement

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is one of Netflix’s highest-rated original sci-fi shows. The anime spin-off of the Cyberpunk 2077 video game debuted in 2022 to immense critical acclaim, earning a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and winning Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year award the same year. The 10-episode series told a neat and concise story, leading many to believe that the show would remain a limited series. But, CD Projekt Red (the producers of Cyberpunk 2077) recently revealed that another series is in the works. While details about the project remain scarce, fans now know when they can expect a gigantic update.

Since the show’s release in 2022, a potential Season 2 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has remained little more than a pipe dream among the fan base. But the official X (formerly Twitter) account for the series has teased fans with the biggest reveal about a second season yet. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be attending this year’s Anime Expo. The event takes place in Los Angeles on July 3–6. An anime attending an anime convention might not seem like a big deal, but Anime Expo is one of the biggest anime events of the year, on par with NYCC or the Venice Film Festival in the world of cinema.

The expo is regarded as a hub for major studios to announce new projects, reveal trailers for hotly anticipated releases, and drop bombshell after bombshell. Of course, it is only speculation that representatives for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners attending the con will lead to a second season. But, given that CD Projekt Red has previously teased a new spin-off or a second season of Edgerunners, and the series was absent from the expo last year, it’s a very safe estimate to assume that the panel will reveal something major.

Does ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Need a Second Season?

As excited as some fans are about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners attending Anime Expo and potentially revealing something big, there is a cautious portion of the fan base who think that Edgerunners should remain as a standalone, one-off series. The anime followed David, a teenager who decides to become an Edgerunner (a tech-infused mercenary) following the death of his mother, desperate to survive in the unforgiving Night City.

As previously mentioned, Edgerunners scored rave reviews from critics and audiences. The show is regarded as one of the best anime of the past decade, and fans are concerned that any attempts at a sequel could tarnish the reputation of the original series. The show was so strongly received, it even managed to revive the Cyberpunk 2077 video game after a disastrous opening launch.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 remains a rumor for now. We know that CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger are working on new projects together within the Cyberpunk universe. But we will have to wait until Anime Expo to see if they will be closely connected to Edgerunners.
