Eddie Howe on potential Newcastle United signings in January transfer window

Eddie Howe has been talking about the January transfer window and potential Newcastle United signings.

The 2026 January transfer window opened on 1 January and 12 days in, so far no incoming new first team squad players.

So will that change?

This transfer window has three weeks remaining, with Premier League clubs having until 7pm on Monday 2 February 2026, to bring in additional players.

The Newcastle United Head Coach asked on Monday morning (12 January 2026) at his pre-Manchester City match press conference, about the possibility of new players arriving at St James’ Park in the nest three weeks.

Eddie Howe replying: “The problem for us is PSR. So whilst no one is saying we can’t do this, or we can’t do that. The key thing to consider is – business now versus business in the summer.”

The reality of course is that until things radically change in terms of closing the gap in revenues with the ‘big six’ Premier League clubs, they will continue to be able to pay more money out in transfer fees and wages than Newcastle United, certainly over the medium and long-term.

Eddie Howe going on to say: “Value for money now, value for money in the summer. Signing the right player. If you sign the wrong player…you are then carrying that for a three, four, five year contract.”

The truth is that whether we are talking PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules), or SCR (Squad Cost Ratio) which is set to replace it, the fact remains that the clubs with the biggest revenues can spend more money within the rules for Premier League clubs.

Eddie Howe also making the obvious point: “Are the right players available this month (January 2026)?” Some Newcastle United fans would be happy to see just any player(s) signed, to see money spent. However, with the inequality of what is allowed to be spent compared to certain other clubs, it is vital Newcastle United get as many decisions right as possible, when it comes to Newcastle United signings.

Eddie Howe summing up the situation that faces himself and the club: “There is a a lot to discuss, a lot to consider, the short-term need against the long-term for this football club.”

Eddie Howe has a brilliant record when it comes to Newcastle United signings these past four years, right from the very start when Kieran Trippier was persuaded to come to St James’ Park back in January 2022, mainly due to the close relationship they have after Howe originally signed the future England star for Burnley back in the day.
