Eddie Howe will not be in the dugout for tomorrow’s 4.30pm kick-off at home to Man Utd.
It’s been made known in recent days the the boss hasn’t been well, leaving him bed-bound, but an official update on Saturday evening confirms he’s now in hospital for treatment.
A club statement reads: ‘Eddie Howe will miss Newcastle United’s Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday due to illness.
‘The Magpies’ head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days.
‘Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.
‘Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.
‘Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James’ Park on Sunday, supported by the club’s first team staff.’
Speaking to the media yesterday, Jason Tindall suggested Howe was expecting to be back in the dugout on tomorrow – but that will not be the case.
Tindall said: “He’s been really ill and has been in bed the last few days. We hope he will be OK for Sunday. We’ve been in daily contact. We’ve been speaking three or four times a day so it’s not affected any of the preparations.
“It’s not very often that Eddie is not able to come to work. It is a bit different, and it has only been a couple of days. But we have a fantastic bunch of lads and they know what they have to deliver.”
“I am not expecting him not to be available, if the game was tomorrow then maybe (he’d miss it), but with the game on Sunday he should be OK.”
