Earth’ Reactions Reveal Positive Return of Ridley Scott’s Saga

One of the most anticipated television projects that is set to release this summer is Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth. The series was first announced in 2020, with Noah Hawley serving as showrunner and Ridley Scott as an executive producer. There wasn’t much known about the series for some time, except that it would serve as a prequel to the original 1979 Alien film and would have closer ties to Scott’s first movie than to the prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. The first episode of the series premiered at San Diego Comic-Con, and initial reactions have revealed whether Alien: Earth shows promise as the first live-action Alien television series.

After the first episode premiered in San Diego, many Alien fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the upcoming series, which is set to premiere on FX on Hulu on August 11. Todd Cassel on X would say that the episode was “very strange (in a good way), smart take.” Most importantly, it doesn’t seem that the show will tread on familiar ground, with Cassel also saying that “thankfully, [it’s] not just a rehash of the movies because of Noah Hawley and his Fargo TV series sensibility. You’ll think you won’t be keeping up with all the characters, but no worry: victims, y’know.”

Another reaction on X would praise the film for its tense atmosphere and scares— something that Fede Álvarez also helped bring back to the series with last year’s feature film Alien: Romulus. Hawley isn’t a stranger to serving up intense scares, as the writer and showrunner has also delivered frightening scenes in his television series Legion, based on the comic book character of the same name.

‘Alien: Earth’ Is a Faithful and Massive Addition to the Sci-Fi Horror Franchise

The Countdown City Geeks page on X would provide a glowing review of the show, stating that it was one of “the best premieres of any show.” The page would also tease the “massive scale” of the production, ensuring fans that FX and Hulu were fully committed to ensuring Alien: Earth would match the production value of the feature films. Moreover, the page would end its review with the promise that the series would deliver on the in-depth lore that the Alien films have now become well-known for.

Given that Alien: Earth takes place between films like Alien: Covenant and the original Alien film, it will be interesting to see how the series ties into Ellen Ripley’s (Sigourney Weaver) fateful journey on the Nostromo and all that follows. There haven’t been any Alien stories that are set explicitly on Earth, making this project all the more exciting, with mostly positive fan reception being a good sign that the show has a bright future ahead of it.

Noah Hawley has previously teased the potential for multiple seasons of Alien: Earth, though nothing has been set in stone beyond this first season. Should the reactions remain positive throughout the remaining episodes of its first season, FX and Hulu may very well want to continue telling terrifying Xenomorph stories set on our home planet. With Fede Álvarez also working on a sequel to Romulus, it’s never been a better time to be an Alien fan.
