Noah Hawley, creator of the TV show Alien: Earth, has weighed in about the possibility of a crossover between the Predator universe and his extension of the Alien franchise. The horror sci-fi series have previously been linked, with ’90s comics mixing both worlds, and the Alien vs. Predator films pitting the savage species against each other. Most recently, the Predator sequel Predator: Badlands took place in the Alien universe. Though it doesn’t have xenomorphs fighting predators, the film does feature the Weyland-Yutani corporation in a major part of the story. Does this mean Hawley is considering his own crossover on Alien: Earth?
The showrunner recently appeared as a guest on the SmartLess podcast, hosted by Sean Hayes, Will Arnett, and Jason Bateman, and mostly talked about his TV work on the shows Fargo and Alien: Earth. When asked about a possible crossover in the upcoming season of the Alien spinoff, Hawley revealed that his current plans don’t call for the creatures first introduced in the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger:
“No, not onto the show, I don’t think. I think Dan Trachtenberg, who made Prey and has made the Badlands movie — you know, I loved Prey. I think he’s doing a great job with that franchise. He clearly has a plan there. I’ve met Dan once, we’re not kind of coordinating any of that stuff. So, it’s not really my plan to do it.”
‘Alien: Earth’ Will Return With Season 2
Although he’s not planning a crossover (at least for now), Hawley is definitely continuing his Alien: Earth journey. Season 2 of the FX spinoff has been greenlit, and will likely enter production soon. Season 1 ended with a nail-biting cliffhanger, and little to no resolution for the Lost Boys.
“It has been our great privilege to work with Noah for more than a decade on some of FX’s best and biggest shows, and we are thrilled to extend our partnership well into the future,” said FX boss John Landgraf after news of the renewal. “Noah never stops surprising us with truly original stories— and his unique ability to bring them to vibrant life as a director and producer as well as writer makes him extraordinary. We can’t wait to get to work on the next season of Alien: Earth, as well as some equally exciting future projects in advanced development.”
Since 2014, Hawley has mostly stayed in the television realm, working exclusively with FX. With Legion, he showed his unique variation on the superhero genre, which shattered conventions and proved something different can be done in the genre. With Fargo, he delivered four impressive seasons of a crime anthology show that got better with each installment. Alien: Earth sees Hawley exploring a different genre, albeit with the same signature storytelling style. Season 2 is still a ways off, but at least fans know the showrunner will further expand one of the most original stories in the Alien franchise’s sprawling timeline.
