Double blow for Bayern Munich as Davies and Upamecano suffer serious injuries

Bayern Munich have suffered a double defensive blow with the news Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano sustained serious injuries while on international duty.

Davies tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee during Canada’s defeat of the United States on Sunday and the left-back will undergo surgery today.

It is another setback for the 24-year-old, who signed a five-year contract extension last month, with his career blighted by injuries over recent seasons.

Upamecano played the full 120 minutes as France beat Croatia 2-0 on Sunday night, even scoring the winning penalty in the shoot-out after the two-legged Nations League tie finished 2-2 on aggregate.

But it was discovered later that he had floating fragments in his left knee which will sideline him for “several weeks”.

Davies and Upamecano to miss season run-in

It is awful timing for Bayern as they look to clinch a domestic and European double.

Vincent Kompany’s men hold a six-point lead over defending champions Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga and also face Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl told the club’s official website: “Unfortunately, there’s always the risk of players returning from international breaks with injuries – this time we’ve been hit particularly hard.

“The absence of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano weighs heavily on FC Bayern. Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his road to recovery. We’ll also be keeping a close eye on Upa in the coming weeks and expect him to be available again soon.

“We have a strong squad and will compensate for these absences. We’ll now grow even closer together. The quality is there to continue pursuing our big goals.”
