Michael Waldron, one of the key architects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s Multiverse Saga, has revealed an idea for the Young Avengers in the scrapped project Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. After creating Loki and writing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Waldron was set to pen the Kang Dynasty script before the film was tabled in favor of Avengers: Doomsday; now, he’s the co-writer on Avengers: Doomsday alongside Stephen McFeely.
Michael Waldron took part in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit to coincide with the season finale of Chad Powers, the Hulu original series he co-created alongside Glen Powell. User hismario123 asked Waldron whether anything in the initial drafts of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty helped inform how he’d approach Avengers: Doomsday. While Waldron didn’t quite answer the question, he did reveal that he and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania screenwriter Jeff Loveness pitched an idea for the Young Avengers pitting the team against a version of Kang, only to discover it was one of the weaker variants — specifically, the lizard-looking Kang seen in the post-credit scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It’s unclear if this pitch was specifically for a Young Avengers project or would have been a scene in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty:
“Jeff Loveness and I spent an afternoon pitching on the Young Avengers defeating a version of Kang and being so stoked about it…only to discover that that particular Kang carried a little card that said to Be Patient with him, it was his first day as a Kang. And then they were so bummed. I think he was gonna be the lizard Kang from the end of Kang Dynasty? I don’t know. Anyway we had fun.”
Marvel Has Been Teasing The Young Avengers for Years
Waldron’s comment suggests that plans for the Young Avengers, whether as a stand-alone title or part of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, were loose at best and may have gone no further than the brainstorming stage. Tying Kang the Conqeuror into the team makes perfect sense, as in the comics, a younger version of Nathaniel Richards becomes the hero Iron Lad in an attempt to avoid turning into his future evil self. Yet it appears Iron Lad might not have been part of the plan; instead, the Young Avengers were considered to play a role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before headlining their own project.
One recurring trend across the Multiverse Saga has been the MCU building the Young Avengers’ roster. WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ms. Marvel, Ironheart, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Marvels, Agatha All Along, and the upcoming VisionQuest include many of the young heroes, and the team’s formation was teased at the end of The Marvels with Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) recruiting Kate Bishop / Hawkeye (Hailee Steinfeld), but that hasn’t been followed up on. So far, the closest the MCU has come to the Young Avengers is the variants of Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, and Riri Williams/Ironheart that teamed up in Marvel Zombies.
The Young Avengers’ MCU status remains an open question. None of the actors associated with the characters have been confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. There’s still a chance they could factor into Avengers: Doomsday and be added in reshoots; the team could also play a role in Avengers: Secret Wars. Yet, given how crowded that movie will likely be, it’s a safer bet that Marvel might hold off on truly introducing the team until after the Multiverse Saga, and make them a significant part of Phase Seven and beyond alongside the X-Men.
