One of the great things about being a horror fan is that there’s always something new to discover. From the latest blockbusters to independent films released on digital, there’s no shortage of movies to seek out and enjoy. While some indie films are obviously better than others, there’s a new hidden gem that fans shouldn’t sleep on that’s quietly taking over streaming.
Titled Marshmallow, this little indie gem was recently added to AMC+ and is now the fourth most popular movie on the streaming service. What’s great about this one is that it takes a familiar premise and puts a new spin on it, creating something that many critics called “refreshing.” Taking place at a summer camp, Marshmallow blends horror and science fiction to weave a terrifying tale of a young boy and his friends who are stalked by a mysterious killer known as the Doctor. It might sound a little bland, but trust us, the twist in Marshmallow is definitely one you won’t see coming. The official synopsis reads:
“When timid 12-year-old Morgan arrives at a secluded camp, a spooky campfire story about a sinister ‘doctor’ begins to unfold with terrifying accuracy. As the legend comes to life and a mysterious figure stalks the woods, Morgan and his new friends must fight to survive the night and uncover the terrifying truth hidden beneath the camp’s idyllic surface — a revelation that challenges everything they thought they knew about fear, identity, and the real nature of their existence.”
‘Marshmallow’ Is Being Compared to ‘Donnie Darko’
Directed by Daniel DelPurgatorio and written by Andy Greskoviak, Marshmallow stars Kue Lawrence, Kai Cech, Giorgia Whigham, Max Malas, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper, Pierson Fodé, Winston Vengapally, Samantha Neyland Trumbo, Alysia Reiner, Corbin Bernsen and Paul Soter. Premiering at the Panic Fest film festival in Kansas City, Missouri last March, the film hit theaters the following month before making its way to streaming. Thus far, it’s receiving high marks from fans and critics.
Boasting an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Marshmallow has been called everything from “cerebral” to a movie full of “bloody scares.” Critic Avi Offer from NYC Movie Guru even went so far as to compare it to the 2001 cult favorite, Donnie Darko:
“Refreshingly unpredictable, exhilarating, provocative and genuinely heartfelt. It’s kindred spirits with another equally smart, surprising and moving sci-fi movie, Donnie Darko.”
Comparing a movie to a classic like Donnie Darko is certainly a bold statement, but one that’s warranted in Marshmallow’s case. Its sci-fi elements certainly share DNA with director Richard Kelly’s masterpiece, which works to create what Matt Donato from Daily Dead calls “a sneakily thought-provoking experience that’s so much more than what we assume it to be.”
Fans are in agreement, giving Marshmallow a 78% score on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter. “It is not at all what you think it will be,” wrote one person in their review, while another added:
“Marshmallow is not your average summer camp slasher and a crucial reminder that the kids are definitely not alright.”
For horror fans looking for something new to watch this weekend, don’t let Marshmallow fall off your radar. You can check it out now on its streaming home of AMC+.
