After months of speculation and confusion, the future of Doctor Who has finally been confirmed by both Disney and the BBC. The long-running British sci-fi series made the jump to the House of Mouse in 2023, with each episode costing around $13 million to produce. Following the costly two-year deal, it’s been rumored that Disney will no longer be involved in things going forward, leaving the future of the series up in the air.
Today, the BBC officially confirmed that Disney will have no future involvement in the series, as the two entities have parted ways. The upcoming miniseries titled The War Between the Land and the Sea will be the last we’ll see of The Doctor on Disney+, but that doesn’t mean Doctor Who is saying goodbye. Quite the opposite, in fact. Along with the news that Disney and the BBC are going their separate ways, it was also announced that Russell T Davies will return to write the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special.
“We’d like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea,” Lindsay Salt, Director of Drama for the BBC said in a statement released today, adding:
“The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”
