DFL rebrands as Bundesliga; changes squad cost rules; launches U21 league

March 4 – Germany’s league association and league organisation (DFL) are aligning with the ‘Bundesliga’ competition name from the start of the 2026-27 season. Gone will be the old, and often confusing, DFL moniker, to be replaced by Bundesliga e.V. and Bundesliga GmbH.

The name change – reinforces the ‘Bundesliga’ brand name, established in 1963 – was rubberstamped by Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs at a DFL Members Assembly held Tuesday.

The name change reinforces the ‘Bundesliga’ brand name, established in 1963.

“Both in sports-political discourse and in global marketing, ‘Bundesliga’ ensures clear identification,” said a DFL statement.

The name change also distances the league from any name confusion with the German Football Association (DFB).

The DFL Group was already operating its new sales and digital subsidiary under the Bundesliga Media brand name.

There will be no redesign of the existing Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 competition logos, said the DFL.

Squad cost limits

As part of the DFL Members Assembly, Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs unanimously agreed to introduce a squad cost rule. The aim of this measure is to secure the long-term and sustainable financial stability of the clubs, parent associations, and the entire league association.

Based on the UEFA financial sustainability regulations, Bundesliga/s new squad costs may not exceed 70% of a club’s football revenues.

The new rules will be gradually introduced from the 2026-27 season and fully implemented from the 2028-29 season. Based on the UEFA financial sustainability regulations, Bundesliga’s new squad costs means clubs may not exceed 70% of  football revenues.

“This is intended to prevent financial extreme cases that could harm the integrity of competition and the stability of the respective club and parent association,” said a Bundesliga statement,

League President Hans-Joachim Watzke, said: “German professional clubs operate very rationally in international comparison. The fact that there have so far been only rare problems with the high demands of the financial licensing criteria underlines the success of the system and the professionalism in the Bundesliga. At the same time, it is necessary to further sharpen the financial regulations.”

U21 club competition coming

The Members Assembly also agreed to introduce an additional U21 competition for Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs starting from the 2026-27 season.
The new competition is designed as a voluntary additional offer for all Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs compete in and is viewed as supporting the transition from youth to adult football.

Participation is aimed at players in the transition age groups from U17 to U21.

The format incorporates two independent series in a league mode, with the best teams from each qualifying for a final tournament.

The games will be held behind closed doors to minimise organisational effort. For the final tournament in summer 2027, spectators and media coverage will be allowed into venues.

“Top-level youth development is an important factor for the future competitiveness and attractiveness of the Bundesliga. However, the results in the youth and transition areas in recent years have not been sufficient. A lack of meaningful playing time for young talents is one of the reasons identified by experts and commissions,” said DFL CEO Marc Lenz.

“With the new additional U21 competition, we are creating an immediate additional opportunity to give talents more playing time at a competitive level and to specifically extend their training period.”
