Delroy Lindo has broken his silence on the racial slur incident that occurred while he was on stage with Michael B. Jordan at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday (Feb. 22). As the two Sinners stars began their introduction, a guest with Tourette’s syndrome – later identified as John Davidson, the real-life inspiration behind the BAFTA-winning film I Swear – shouted the N-word during an outburst that was the result of an involuntary verbal tic. The moment sparked significant controversy and a public apology from the BBC.
Lindo has since expressed his disappointment over how the situation was handled, telling Vanity Fair at the BAFTAs after-party that he would have appreciated some direct communication from the awards body or events team. He asserted that he and Jordan “did what we had to do” by remaining professional and continuing to present the award for Best Special Visual Effects despite the outburst, but that he also wished “someone from BAFTA spoke to us afterward” to seemingly address the incident with them.
The controversial moment garnered intense backlash online, with viewers voicing outrage over the BBC’s lack of censorship despite the BAFTAs being aired on a two-hour tape delay. Sinners production designer Hannah Bleacher was among the critics who condemned the ceremony’s handling of the situation. She also criticized the “throwaway” apology issued by host Alan Cumming, which included the phrase “if you were offended,” pointing out that it only “made the situation worse” because “of course we were offended.”
