It’s time to get your final re-watch in now, because How I Met Your Mother will be leaving its current streaming home this December. The CBS sitcom, created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, first aired in 2005 and is regarded as one of the best sitcoms of the 21st Century (even with its very controversial ending). For nine years, fans followed along as Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) told the most drawn-out story of how he met his children’s mother. The moment the series ended in 2014, many fans brushed off their DVD box sets (remember those?) and re-watched the series all over again. In the age of streaming, re-watching How I Met Your Mother has never been easier. At least, that was until its current streaming home decided to drop the program.
How I Met Your Mother is currently streaming on Netflix. However, the streamer is about to break the bro-code by losing the series. How I Met Your Mother will officially leave Netflix on December 3. However, it’s not all bad news, because all nine seasons are still streaming on Hulu with a Disney+ subscription.
Ted Mosby began his story of meeting his children’s mother in 2005. Embroiled in his story were his best friends Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Marshall (Jason Segel), along with Marshall’s future wife, Lily (Alyson Hannigan), and newcomer to the group, Robin (Cobie Smulders). Although if you thought Avatar and The Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions were too long, then Ted Mosby has you beaten. For nine years, his children sat down and listened to him babble on about his wife.
‘How I Met Your Mother’s Doomed Spin-Off
Along with the likes of The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother was one of the dominant studio sitcoms during the 00s. And, with every successful sitcom comes spin-offs. The Big Bang Theory struck gold with Young Sheldon, which received its own spin-off titled George and Mandy’s First Marriage. However, How I Met Your Mother hasn’t been as fortunate.
In 2022, audiences returned to the world of How I Met Your Mother with How I Met Your Father. If the title didn’t completely give it away, How I Met Your Father followed Sophie, played by Hilary Duff and voiced by Kim Cattrall, another resident of New York with another overly long story of how she met her spouse. However, while Ted’s children had to sit there bored for nine years, Sophie’s children only had to suffer for two. How I Met Your Father was cancelled after just two seasons on Hulu. The show’s cancellation was the result of a number of factors. First and foremost, the show underperformed in comparison to its predecessor. Secondly, Disney’s stock had taken a plummet at the time of Season 2’s release, and the House of Mouse was in full cost-cutting mode, slashing any shows that were too expensive or even slightly underperformed.
