David Ayer & Shia LaBeouf’s Action Thriller Finds Free Streaming Success

David Ayer & Shia LaBeouf’s Action Thriller Finds Free Streaming Success

Director David Ayer

, the filmmaker behind the likes of Training Day, Suicide Squad, and the recent Jason Statham action outings The Beekeeper and A Working Man, delivered what proved to be a hugely divisive action thriller back in 2020. And, despite the divisiveness (and the fact it was a box office bomb), the gritty action effort has finally found success thanks to free streaming.

Written, directed, and produced by David Ayer, The Tax Collector

stars Bobby Soto, Cinthya Carmona, George Lopez, alongside a truly unhinged Shia LaBeouf

and follows two enforcers who find themselves facing an uncertain future when an old rival returns to the fray. The Tax Collector has been leaping in and out of the top 10 on the free streaming platform Tubi over the last few days, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

Despite a grossly captivating performance from Shia LaBeouf, The Tax Collector was savagely panned by critics. The action thriller also faltered at the box office, grossing just $1.3 million against its budget of $4 million, and thus becoming a box office bomb.

The Tax Collector, however, caused a huge divide between critics and audiences. The movie now holds a “rotten” rating of 17% from the former on Rotten Tomatoes, while the latter found far more to enjoy, with the movie earning a respectable 73% on the Popcornmeter. “A taxing and ill-advised crime drama, The Tax Collector fails to accrue much meaningful interest,” the critics’ consensus reads. MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman found The Tax Collector to be a major disappointment, saying at the time…

“David Ayer stumbles badly with his latest LA gangster flick. The Tax Collector is violent and gruesome as hell, but poorly written with an absurd plot. The characters behave nonsensically in a world of obvious betrayals. Ayer also tries to incorporate religious and familial themes. It’s a disjointed effort that ultimately fails on both counts. The Tax Collector is a big disappointment from the writer of Training Day, Street Kings, and End of Watch.”

In stark contrast, many users on Rotten Tomatoes awarded The Tax Collector a perfect score of 5/5 stars. “How did this only get a 17%. SUCH a good movie!!!!!” said one, with another adding, “Looked like a Good movie but never found the time to watch it. After watching it I wished I would’ve watched it sooner! Shia Lebouf was unbelievable.” Lastly, this Rotten Tomatoes user called The Tax Collector “amazing,“ saying, “The acting was brilliant. The story and plot were thrilling. Finally the writing that made the 90s movies so great, has came back to us.”

David Ayer has recently found success once again thanks to his collaborations with action icon Jason Statham. The pair’s first effort, last year’s effort, The Beekeeper, has now sparked a franchise, and this year’s A Working Man is now surging up the streaming charts.
