David Ayer Sets the Record Straight About His Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’

David Ayer, the director of 2016’s Suicide Squad, sets the record straight about pursuing the release of his director’s cut of the film. And he has done so by replying to a fan on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Even though Ayer went through a solid year with the release of The Beekeeper, Jason Statham’s box office hit, the director still looks back on what would have been if Warner Bros. had released his version of the divisive Suicide Squad. He often goes on X and shows a wide range of emotions regarding the film. Just a few days ago, Ayer was nostalgic and posted what can only be described as a fanmade poster with the following caption:

I hope my real film can be shared one day. I appreciate the continued support and interest. #ReleaseTheAyerCut.

Follower @DrHouseGaming2 replied by writing, “If your film was good in the first place you wouldn’t need to have your own cut of the film.” Ayer was quick to reply with a hopeful yet sincere attitude about the release of his cut of the film:

“The best version simply has not been seen. I know how difficult it is for someone outside the industry to comprehend how insanely different two cuts a film can be. If you dislike what you’ve seen , here’s an opportunity to see what I actually intended and then judge once you have all the information.

Honestly I have no idea if WB would ever release my version. And I have to defer to James and the studio to manage it as they see fit. It’s not something I control. I just believe it would be a lot of fun for those who want to see it, to see my cut.

If it’s not for you, I totally get that. We all have different taste and likes and dislikes.”

Jason Statham’s latest, The Beekeeper, is an entertaining action spectacular. However, it does look a lot like the John Wick franchise.

#ReleaseTheAyerCut is a hashtag reminiscent of what happened when millions of fans pleaded for Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League. The hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut was eventually part of a successful business meeting and Warner Bros. spent $70 million on Snyder’s project. The 242-minute superhero epic was an improvement over the original release directed by Joss Whedon, but it still was an expensive experiment that’s hard to believe Warner Bros. will repeat. Much less with an IP that’s not very popular and was followed up soon after with a much better version fro James Gunn, 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

Is It Too Late for the Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’?

While the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) is officially dead, the new DCU (DC Universe) is led by James Gunn and his new vision of the superhero franchise. A decision was made to turn the page, and old books have been closed. Gunn’s new DCU is the priority. Ayer’s Suicide Squad was part of an already divisive franchise; the reception of the DCEU varied too much. If Ayer were to release his film at some point, it would be a vestige of the past.

By this point, Ayer’s only shot at seeing his film get released somehow, is if it doesn’t require any work, and that in itself is very unlikely. He hasn’t offered details as to how much of the Ayer Cut is actually finished, and Warner Bros. would surely have to invest some money to deliver a watchable film and not a “work in progress.” Fans will have to stick with Ayer’s optimism and pray for a miracle. The big question is: Outside a very peculiar community of fans, does anyone want to see the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad? Does it actually matter?
