While Daniel Radcliffe has been one of the most popular actors in the business throughout his adult life, he first came into the public eye playing the leading role in the Harry Potter movies. Long before a new cast of actors taking over this story starting in 2027, Radcliffe was surrounded by some of the most notable British actors in history, including Robbie Coltrane, Jim Broadbent, Gary Oldman, Dame Maggie Smith, and more. This cast earned massive praise for their work across the original eight Harry Potter films, adding a level of cache and respectability to one of the biggest movie franchises in history.
Decades after those films dominated theaters, Radcliffe reflected on some of his wildest moments on set with the cast in an appearance on Hot Ones. Looking back on his work with the late Sir Michael Gambon, who played Professor Dumbledore in the last six Potter films, Radcliffe admitted Gambon “f**ked around all the time” and would not stop until the cameras began rolling. Sharing a couple of hilarious acronyms Gambon used, Radcliffe could not help but laugh when thinking about Gambon’s process and the fun the two had together:
“Michael Gambon, may he rest in peace, incredible man, he would…he f*cked around all the time. He would never stop. Until ‘action’ had been said, sometimes, he would try to make me laugh or do something. Some actors love to dress the whole process up in mystique or be an enigma…Michael Gambon would be like, ‘What’s the shot?’ And you’d be like, ‘Oh, camera’s over here, Michael. So you’re there in front of it, but you’re looking that way.’ And he said, ‘Oh, what is this? B-O-H-N-A-R?’ I was like, ‘Sorry, what’s that?’ He said, ‘Back of head, no acting required.’ He was like, ‘Yes, yes it is.’
When we were doing the sixth film, me and him were doing the final sequence, and we were in this boat. I can’t remember the details, but we were in this little boat going over to this island surrounded by bad stuff. And he’d be like, ‘What’s this, T-T-I-A-B? I was like, ‘What?’ ‘Two tw*ts in a boat.’ ‘Yes, Michael, it is.’
Michael Gambon’s Impact on Daniel Radcliffe & Harry Potter
Filling in for the late Richard Harris in 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Michael Gambon provided a new interpretation of Hogwarts’ headmaster that brought gravitas and power. However, for all the strength and intensity he showcased through this role on the big screen, Radcliffe seemed to indicate he was also one of the biggest jokers of anybody on the Harry Potter set over the years.
Bringing a different feel to Dumbledore upon his arrival, Gambon had an unforgettable impact on the franchise, bringing Dumbledore’s most notable moments from the books to life. From his duels with Voldemort to his quest to find the Horcruxes alongside Harry, Gambon brought every bit of energy and skill he had to this pivotal and complicated hero.
Looking ahead, HBO Max is deep into production on their Harry Potter TV reboot, which will feature John Lithgow as the next actor to play Professor Dumbledore. This is sure to draw comparisons to Gambon’s portrayal, but with comments like the ones Radcliffe made, his memory is sure to live on for decades to come.
