October 17 – The President of Cypriot second-division football club Karmiotissa, Stavros Demosthenous (pictured), was shot dead in Limassol on Friday morning, local police announced.
According to preliminary information, an armed man riding a motorcycle opened fire on 49-year-old Demosthenous’s car in front of his home, and he died while his son was driving him to the hospital.
Karmiotissa competed in the First Division last season but were relegated to the Second Division. Since its establishment in 1979, the team has mainly played in the lower divisions of football in Cyprus.
Law enforcement agencies confirmed that the perpetrator is being sought, and investigators are attempting to reconstruct the timeline of the attack using CCTV footage and witness statements.
At the same time, the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) confirmed the news saying that all Karmiotissa matches have been postponed until next Sunday.
“Due to today’s tragic events concerning the President of Karmiotissa Polemidion, Stavros Demosthenous, the CFA (Cyprus Football Association) has decided to postpone all matches of the Karmiotissa team in the Men’s, Youth, and Children’s Championships that were scheduled from today until next Sunday.
“The President, the members of the Board of Directors, the General Manager, and the staff of the CFA express their sincere condolences to Karmiotissa and the relatives of the deceased,” said the CFA statement.
