Previously code-named Project Orion, Cyberpunk 2 is the still-nebulous, upcoming sequel to beloved RPG and comeback success Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk 2 remains almost entirely mysterious – developer CD Projekt Red’s next release is The Witcher 4 – but there are some promising indicators that development is ramping up.
CD Projekt Red has listed 29 new open positions specifically for work on Cyberpunk 2. The jobs are spread between the United States, Canada, and CDPR’s native Poland, and they run the gamut of roles, from quality assurance to art and studio operations. While it’s not explicit new info on Cyberpunk 2 itself, these 29 jobs aren’t far behind the number CDPR is listing for The Witcher 4, indicating development of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is well underway.
Cyberpunk 2077’s Sequel Is Coming
Cyberpunk 2 hasn’t been officially shown off. In fact, CD Projekt Red has been relatively quiet regarding its new games since 2077‘s release, only showing a couple Witcher 4 trailers and an Unreal Engine tech demo of Ciri’s upcoming adventure. Job listings have been one of our only sources of tidbits, like one suggesting Cyberpunk 2 will have multiplayer, like its predecessor was originally supposed to have.
So many jobs listed for Cyberpunk 2 is a great sign, especially with how many layoffs the industry has seen over the last two years, and it’s yet more evidence that CD Projekt Red appears to be expanding to increase its output. The developer currently has five projects in production: Cyberpunk 2, The Witcher 4, a remake of the original Witcher game, a Witcher spin-off with multiplayer from previously independent studio The Molasses Flood, and a new IP known only as Hadar.
The New Game Has A Lot To Live Up To
The disaster of Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch has, miraculously, been effectively forgotten – or forgiven. It now enjoys a sterling reputation as one of the most ambitious open-world RPGs, and is beloved by fans for not only its story and gameplay, but the long-standing, transformative support CD Projekt Red has given it. Cyberpunk 2077 has been almost entirely overhauled since its release in 2020, and now leaves very high expectations for Cyberpunk 2.
Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith made comments suggesting the sequel will, at least in part, not take place in Night City, the franchise’s principal setting. A change of scenery could help the game stand out, but Night City is itself as important a character as Johnny Silverhand or Adam Smasher. The hype for Cyberpunk 2077 was unprecedented, and Cyberpunk 2 will likely have similar expectations put on it. Without any sort of reveal, we’re still years away from getting to play the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, so with CDPR hiring more devs, there’s plenty of time for the project to come together.
