While plenty of TV shows have action and adventure, there’s arguably no video game adaptation that is as good as Fallout. Season 1 dropped on Amazon Prime Video in April 2024, and fans were excited to dive into Season 2, which premiered on Dec. 16th, 2025. The series is an equally unsettling and fun story about Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), her family, and her resilience and strength in a post-apocalyptic world. It also brings up many compelling conversations about the streaming age. Since all eight Season 1 episodes dropped on the same day, and Season 2 is being released weekly, we’ve wondered which schedule is better. It’s also interesting to note that Fallout Season 2 isn’t being discussed as much online as Season 1.
The beginning of 2026 has already seen some excellent TV. The smart doctors of The Pitt are back, we’re immersed in the world of George R.R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and romance fans are gearing up for Bridgerton Season 4. Fallout Season 2 has also been impressive, and now that there are just two episodes left, it’s the perfect time to think about where the series can go from here.
‘Fallout’ Season 3 Has Been Confirmed
Prime Video renewed Fallout for a third season in May 2025. Of course, this was amazing news for fans eager to see how the Prime Video series will continue to translate the game’s characters, storylines, and settings onto the small screen. However, this renewal was also exciting because it came a few months before the second season’s December 2025 premiere.
At the time of this writing, there is no release date for Fallout Season 3. Since the second season is still dropping weekly on Prime Video, and the show hasn’t filmed yet, it would be highly unlikely for the third season to come out in 2026. However, there have been some updates. In December, Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard told Variety, “For us on the game and TV show side, we’re writing Season 3 now.” As for shooting the season, according to Production List, Season 3 will begin filming in May 2026 in Santa Clarita, California. And, in December, executive producer Jonathan Nolan told IGN, “we’re hoping to be shooting against next summer.” As he said, it would be great to “be back on the air as soon as we can.”
So, given the time needed to finish writing the scripts, get the cast together, and film, fans can maybe expect a 2027 release window. Since Season 1 came out in the spring of 2024 and Season 2 came out in late 2025, 2027 makes sense. While other streaming shows often go several years between seasons, Fallout has been a different story.
Which Cast Members Will Star in ‘Fallout’ Season 3?
There has been no official update on the cast members who will star in Fallout Season 3. However, fans can likely expect regular Fallout cast members like Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, and Ella Purnell, who plays Lucy, to return. It also seems likely that Walton Goggins, who plays the Ghoul, will come back.
The strong character arcs in the series keep viewers invested, and it wouldn’t be anywhere near as engaging if there were too many new characters each season. However, since the second season added some talented names to the cast, like Kumail Nanjiani, Macaulay Culkin, and Justin Theroux, we can probably expect Season 3 to feature some big names, too.
What Will ‘Fallout’ Season 3 Be About?
It’s unclear where Fallout Season 3 will take place and exactly what direction the story will go in. More will become clear once fans get to see the second season finale, which will drop on Feb. 4th, 2026. For now, though, many fans think that the third season of the Prime Video series will feature the Commonwealth. Others wonder if the Capitol Wasteland will become a major setting as well.
Since Fallout Season 2 takes place in New Vegas, viewers can likely expect Season 3 to switch things up again. While the creative team hasn’t shared details about the upcoming season, they have talked in a more general sense about the overall approach. Todd Howard told Dextero:
“the show has an opportunity more so than a single game to pull things because we can jump locations, we can jump timelines.”
Howard continued, “So whereas a game, we’re going to be set in one location and we’re not going to jump, then all of a sudden the camera cuts to this… We’re not going to do that.” He added that, “we can do more than we thought we could when we first started,” which is interesting.
So, does that mean that the third season will feature a few new locations? It definitely seems possible. Also, based on comments made by producer Jonathan Nolan in a 2023 interview with IGN, it sounds like the series is only going to get more creative. Nolan said, “Our main goal is to deliver one terrific season of television, but I think there’s a conversation in the conversation with Todd from the beginning about telling an original story within the Fallout universe, which seemed like a unique possibility given the way that the games work.”
Although we don’t know exactly where Fallout Season 3 will take place or what will happen, it seems likely that it’s going to be a staple of Amazon Prime Video for a while. As Aaron Morten explained in May 2025, he was told that hopes are high that Fallout will have five or six seasons. While the streaming service hasn’t renewed the series beyond Season 3, Fallout Season 2 is a big hit, and we can imagine watching Lucy’s adventure-packed story for years to come.
