Community Shield report, result, goals

Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott spurned spot kicks for Liverpool as Crystal Palace won at Wembley Stadium for the second time inside three months with a 3-2 victory on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the 2025 Community Shield.

New Liverpool signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong struck either side of Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty as the sides traded three goals inside the opening 22 minutes.

Ismaila Sarr then surged on to Adam Wharton’s well-weighted pass in the right channel, entered the penalty area and curled a cute right-footed finish past goalkeeper Alisson via the near post in the 77th minute.

Salah sent the opening attempt of the shootout high over the target and goalkeeper Dean Henderson denied Mac Allister and Elliott to make Palace the first team to win the showpiece match at the first attempt, with Alisson turning Eberechi Eze’s effort against a post and Borna Sosa hitting the crossbar on his Eagles debut before substitute Justin Devenny smashed in the decisive kick.

France Under-21 forward Ekitike showed why Liverpool paid Eintracht Frankfurt an initial £69m for him in the fourth minute, swapping passes with Florian Wirtz on the left and shifting to his right just outside the box to curl a precise low finish beyond USA defender Chris Richards and Henderson to break the deadlock with his fourth touch.

Germany midfielder Wirtz arrived from Leverkusen in June for £100m, potentially rising to a British-record £116m.

In the highest-scoring first half of a Community Shield match since 1992, FA Cup holders Palace equalised through Mateta’s penalty after Virgil van Dijk fouled Sarr.

Palace were level for four minutes, Frimpong’s cross from the right looping over Henderson to restore Liverpool’s lead after Dominik Szoboszlai’s angled pass had located the Netherlands right-back.

Frimpong joined the reigning Premier League champions from Leverkusen for £29.5m in May.

Palace may be the happier side with the 90 minutes that preceded penalties, showing the poised balance of resolve and attacking verve that took them past Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May.

Kerkez and Frimpong were the new full-backs in a back four for Liverpool that was occasionally unconvincing, including a mistake by Van Dijk when the captain misjudged his side’s offside trap for Palace’s second goal.

Van Dijk was seen shaking his head after Sarr struck as Liverpool’s record extended to one clean sheet in their last 12 matches, including friendlies.

Mateta and Sarr also scored for Palace in the shootout, as did Gakpo and Szoboszlai for Liverpool.

This was the sixth Community Shield match of the last nine to go to penalties, including each of the last three.

Manchester City beat Manchester United last year and Arsenal beat City in 2023, while the Gunners beat Liverpool in 2020 and Chelsea in 2017 and City beat Liverpool in 2019.

Palace boss Oliver Glasner chose the same 11 who began their first FA Cup final triumph.

Talisman Eberechi Eze, whose future at the club has been the subject of much speculation over the summer, was expected to provide Palace’s creative spark.

Mateta led the line in the club’s first Community Shield appearance.

Palace starting XI: Henderson, Munoz, Richards, Lacroix, Guehi, Mitchell, Wharton, Kamada, Eze, Sarr, Mateta

Palace subs: Benitez, Lerma, Clyne, Hughes, Esse, Edouard, Sosa, Devenny, Cardines

Liverpool line-up vs Palace

Left-back Milos Kerkez, who joined Liverpool from Bournemouth for £40m in June, was among Liverpool’s starters.

Liverpool starting XI: Alisson, Frimpong, Van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez, Szoboszlai, Wirtz, Jones, Salah, Ekitike, Gakpo

Liverpool subs: Mamardashvili, Endo, Mac Allister, Chiesa, Elliott, Robertson, Nyoni, Doak, Ngumoha
