Club in ‘pole position’ to sign Callum Wilson as four eye cut-price deal – Report

As he nears the end of his contract with Newcastle, a new report claims Callum Wilson is being targeted by a string of Premier League clubs, in what could be our final opportunity to sell the striker before potentially losing him on a free.

According to The Sun, Wilson is being eyed up by Brentford, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Southampton, with the Bees believed to be in pole position out of the four clubs.

The report states that Wilson is ‘thought to be open-minded’ about a move away from St James’ Park, while Newcastle are open to his sale given his age (32), contract situation (contract up next summer) and continued injury issues.

The former Bournemouth striker, who is only one more Premier League goal away from becoming our outright second-top scorer in the competition, has yet to play this season, and many fans have grown impatient with his persistent injury concerns and the impact it has had on our depth – or lack of it – up top.

At this stage in Wilson’s career, a move to Brentford or Southampton in particular would perhaps see him secure the most amount of game time and opportunity. Brentford may be on the lookout for Ivan Toney’s replacement, while the Saints would see him return close to the South Coast; where he spent several years with Bournemouth.

Callum Wilson arrived on Tyneside for £20m back in the Summer of 2020, and considering our reported PSR issues, it could make sense to recoup a fee in January while we still can.
