Civilization 7 Is Coming To VR, Bringing The RTS To Life Like Never Before

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII isn’t planning to stay in the Antiquity Age, as proven by a recent announcement and trailer announcing that the strategic world building game is going to be released on VR later this year. Currently, the game is still in its advanced access stage, with the official release of the non-VR edition of the game taking place on February 11, 2025. Screen Rant‘s review of the game paints it in a favorable light, despite some issues and growing pains of a series that is changing the systems after over two decades.

As announced on Civilization 7‘s news page, and in a companion trailer for the reveal, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – VR is in development by PlaySide Studios and will be published by 2K. The game will be released in Spring 2025 for the Meta Quest 3 and 3S, and is available for people to wishlist now, although no price has been shown yet. The current, non-VR, edition of Civ 7 is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, and is currently in Advanced Access for anyone who prepurchased the Deluxe or Founders editions of the title.

Civ 7 VR Is To Be Released In Spring 2025

The announcement for Civ 7 – VR proclaims that it will make the RTS a more immersive experience of building an empire, researching technology, and entering into diplomatic relations, or war, with other civilizations. In a trailer released on YouTube, it shows bits of the gameplay that players will experience, with people taking on an almost God-like position above their virtual worlds and being able to control pieces on the map with the Meta Quest controllers.

Bringing Civ 7 to the virtual reality gaming space comes as a bit of a surprise, particularly as a game that is so involved with a plethora of menus, and games that can last many hours long. The 4X strategy game will be designed to play more like an interactive board game experience in VR, meeting with world leaders around a command table with the world laid out in the middle. Players can enjoy the game in single-player or join a game with up to three other VR players in online multiplayer.

Negative Reviews For Game Glitches, Bugs, And Crashes

Sadly, the early reviews from players in the Advanced Access of Civ 7 do not speak highly of the new experience. Several of these player reviews have pointed to the game feeling unfinished, and many others have experienced bugs and game crashes early into their campaigns. I, also, suffered from my game crashing within the first two hours and not loading again for me.

Firaxis is aware of the issues that have been experienced by the community and has been quick to state that fixes are coming. The company is working on designing a better UI experience and patching in several quality-of-life improvements. Civ 7 – VR has a release window for this Spring, which will hopefully give developers time to iron out some of the problems that players have been facing in Civilization 7 so far.
