Jaume Collet-Serra hit the gold mine when he directed Netflix’s recent Christmas action flick, Carry On, which starred Taron Egerton as a TSA agent blackmailed by a group of international terrorists on Christmas Eve. Carry On was a major success for Netflix, breaking into the streamer’s Top 5 most watched movies of all-time list. Collet-Serrra is now back to hopefully make lightning strike twice with a new horror/thriller that has been described as a blend between Don’t Breathe and 1917.
Per Deadline, Jaume Collet-Serra is set to direct Play Dead, a new original survival thriller. The script is being penned by Peter Stanley-Ward and Natalie Conway. Very little is known about Play Dead, other than its two main inspirations, which came from one of Deadline’s sources. Don’t Breathe and 1917 couldn’t be further apart in terms genre. The former, directed by Alien: Romulus‘ Fede Álvarez, was a horror/thriller about a group of inept thieves being locked into the home of and hunted by a war veteran, while Sam Mendes’ 1917 was a one-shot World War I movie about two soldiers racing to the front line to prevent the Allied forces falling into a trap.
Jaume Collet-Serra has a long history of jumping between genres. As well as the immensely successful action flick, Carry On, Collet-Serra is no stranger to the horror genre, having directed 2005’s House of Wax and the creepy 2009 horror hit Orphan — in which a bereaved husband and wife adopt a “9-year-old” girl who isn’t all that she seems. Outside the horror genre, Collet-Serra has also tackled big budget blockbusters. Like Gore Verbinski did with Pirates of the Caribbean, Jaume Collet-Serra brought Disney’s Jungle Cruise ride to the big screen in 2021, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Collet-Serra also directed the Dwayne Johnson-led Black Adam — which failed to change the “hierarchy of power in the DC Universe,” as Johnson incessantly repeated during the movie’s promotional tour.
Will ‘Carry On’ Get a Sequel?
It’s almost a given nowadays that any immensely successful movie will be greenlit for at least one sequel, with the hopes of transforming it into a cash cow franchise. Although, in the case of Carry On, that might not be the case. “We don’t have any plans for a sequel,” Collet-Sera revealed in January. However, he and Netflix both appear to be open to the idea of Carry On 2 (which needs to be called Keep Calm and Carry On) if the right idea comes about. “But if audiences wanted a sequel, families wanted a sequel and if we had an idea that would spark and live up to the original maybe we would do something. But right now, there are no plans.”
If Carry On is given a sequel, Jaume Collet-Serra revealed that the second installment may move away from Egerton’s Ethan Kopek, and focus on one of the movie’s secondary characters, like detective Elena Cole, played by Danielle Deadwyler. Carry On is streaming on Netflix.
Play Dead has no official release date.
