Captain America’s Kids and Their Connections to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Captain America’s Kids and Their Connections to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

WARNING: Includes potential SPOILERS for Avengers: Doomsday and the upcoming trailer!

Chris Evans is returning to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, and this time, he’s a father. While Steve Rogers has children in Marvel Comics, the MCU has yet to feature any. The film franchise has seen Captain America with several romantic interests, notably Peggy Carter, with whom he ended Avengers: Endgame, thanks to time travel. The MCU has also seen him in a short-lived romantic storyline with Sharon Carter, Peggy’s niece.

Now that the MCU is finally set to turn Captain America into a proud dad, who will the child be? Signs point to it being the child of Peggy and Steve, but with the multiverse in play, anything is possible. If Robert Downey Jr. can return as Doctor Doom, Steve’s child could be any of his unique children from throughout Marvel Comics. The MCU could be about to introduce a curveball, with even greater stakes for the upcoming Avengers sequel. Yet the name of Steve’s child could suggest what the plot may entail.

Sarah Rogers

Marvel Comics

Crusader, aka Sarah Rogers, the daughter of Steve Rogers and the X-Men‘s Rogue, was introduced in Marvel’s What If…? She has mutant abilities inherited from her mother, including flight, and she carries Captain America’s iconic shield. While it seems unlikely that the MCU would include Crusader, the inclusion of X-Men characters could open the door for more unique possibilities.

Sarah Rogers is featured in a storyline from What If…? called “Brave New World” that posits what would happen if characters remained on Battleworld following the events of Secret Wars, of which she was a result. The comic sees Doctor Doom posing as a villain and Sarah wielding Mjölnir, and with Avengers: Secret Wars on the way, Crusader may have more ties to the MCU’s future than some fans realize.

Ellie Rogers

Ellie Rogers as Viper Ellie with symbiote suit in Marvel Comics Marvel Comics

Ellie Rogers is the daughter of Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter in an alternate reality, again linked to the fallout from Battleworld, where Hydra rules the United States. She is a fierce fighter in her own right, taking the fight to Hydra in her Secret Wars comic debut. There is also a storyline where Ellie is infected by Venom in a world where his powers can turn people into his mindless drones, with Cap’s star taking on a new look in the black symbiote suit.

Ellie may not be a top choice for the MCU to use, likely steering clear of Steve and Sharon’s relationship. Still, her connections to Secret Wars and Battleworld can’t be ignored in Marvel’s buildup to the following two Avengers films. While unlikely, Ellie poses a unique possibility from Captain America’s comic book family tree.

Red Skull

Red Skull from Marvel's Ultimate Comics line Marvel Comics

Yes, the Red Skull. In Marvel’s Ultimate line of comics, Steve Rogers has a child with his girlfriend, Gail Richards (no relation to the Richards family of The Fantastic Four). After Captain America was presumed dead, Gail gave the child to the American government, who then proceeded to experiment on him, trying to recreate what his father was. The result was the Red Skull, who became a psychopathic serial killer on his quest to turn back time with the Cosmic Cube.

It’s doubtful the MCU will use one of the grimmer progeny from Steve’s comic book history. The Red Skull has played a part in the MCU, acting as Captain America’s first villain. Still, with Avengers: Doomsday already rolling the dice on bringing Evans back as Cap, they’ll play it safer than letting his kid be the Red Skull.

Nicky Rogers & Steven Rogers Jr.

Nicky Rogers in Marvels What If Comics Marvel Comics

Nicky Rogers, seemingly named for Nick Fury, is the young son of Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter. Steven Rogers Jr. is their older son, Nicky’s brother. The two children stem from another What If…? scenario in the comics called “What If Sharon Carter Had Not Died,” which sees Steve and Sharon spending their lives together and having a family.

Nicky and Steven Jr. are shown to be opposites of their father, not caring much for his heroic antics. The brothers add stakes rather than following in their father’s footsteps. The MCU may be looking to add a dynamic, super-powered child or two to the franchise, making the brothers seem unlikely. Still, Cap may want a peaceful life for his kids away from fighting, which could make Nicky and Steven Jr. viable for Avengers: Doomsday.

The Rogers Twins

Rogers Twins in Marvel Comics Marvel Comics

The Rogers twins are the identical sons of Captain America and Scarlet Witch from a What If…? storyline. The comic showed Wanda creating an alternate reality in which she and Steve had the perfect family, which came at the cost of bringing down the Avengers and manipulating the world to live out their idyllic dreams.

The MCU has already established that the Scarlet Witch can manipulate reality, creating her children, as seen in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While the franchise is unlikely to revisit those themes with Captain America’s kids, it does pose an interesting setup for something the MCU has already embraced.

James Rogers

Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow TV movie Lionsgate Home Entertainment

James Rogers is the son of Captain America and Black Widow in the animated TV movie Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow. Following his parents’ deaths, he was raised by Iron Man at a secret underground base, where he was trained and educated, featuring powers much like his father. James notably took on Ultron with his other superhero trainees, and the character has since made minor comic book appearances.

James makes a bit of an obscure choice for the MCU, and given that his mother is Black Widow, the Marvel franchise is unlikely to play into that angle. Steve’s son also doesn’t have any significant connections to anything that Doomsday and Secret Wars look to be building toward, making James’ inclusion a long shot.

Sharon Rogers

Sharon Rogers - daughter of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter on Earth-415 Marvel Comics

Sharon Rogers is the daughter of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter. Since Sharon is the only child of Steve and Peggy, she is the most likely candidate for the MCU. Her origins lie in the Marvel Future Fight video game, which presents a world in which Captain America was never frozen in ice, allowing him and Peggy to get together after the war. Eventually, Steve retires, with Sharon taking up the mantle of Captain America.

While Sharon’s origins are obscure, she is a perfect candidate for the events of Avengers: Doomsday. Her story may not be as entwined with Secret Wars as Ellie or Sarah, but the MCU has leaned into Steve and Peggy, pointing to Sharon as the likely child seen with Evans. However, that remains to be seen.
