Can the ‘Task’ Finale Stick the Landing After Episode 6’s Shocking Revelations?

Can the ‘Task’ Finale Stick the Landing After Episode 6’s Shocking Revelations?

Spoiler Warning: Episodes 1-6 of Task

Task, the latest crime miniseries to be produced and released by HBO Max, comes to an end next Sunday with its seventh and final episode. Throughout its first episodes, several storylines flowed into one final showdown that came true in Episode 6. It was a gripping semi-conclusion that, surprisingly, solved the show’s main plot line before the series finale. Episode 6 also had its respective shake-up with not one, but two very important deaths. Needless to say, viewers were left dumbstruck at the loss of these very compelling main characters.

However, as much as it seems that the show is officially over in regard to its primary plot, it isn’t. The bad guys are still on the loose, new ones have risen, and justice has yet to be served. That bittersweet feeling viewers get whenever their new favorite series ends, we already got last Sunday. But this doesn’t mean Task has landed its final blow. As audiences prepare for the finale, they find themselves joining the survivors in a full-blown revenge epic. What’s important is that writer and showrunner Brad Ingelsby has not concealed any details to be resolved in the final episode, and everything is out in the clear.

Episode 7 will see the good side of the law serving justice to those who deserve it, and the ones in charge will do so unhinged and unrestricted. Task has one final opportunity to stick with its landing after Episode 6’s violent showdown, and it all has to do with letting its drama loose and delivering the correct sentences to its villains.

What Is ‘Task’ About?

HBO

In Task, FBI agent Tom Brandis is forced to lead a task force that’s investigating violent robberies against houses where local drug gangs operate. Brandis is going through his own personal struggle against a violent death in the family, but this doesn’t stop him from leading the team formed by Lizzie Stover, Aleah Clinton, and Anthony Grasso. Together, they will try to solve the latest of the crimes — one that left multiple dead bodies, and one child missing.

On the other hand, Task also tells the story of Robbie Prendergrast, the leader of the thieves who pose as garbage collectors, but instead do their own kind of surveillance of the “trap houses.” All the houses they hit are part of the operation run by The Dark Hearts. During the last job, a gang member unexpectedly arrives, and Robbie is forced to grab a duffle bag that contains the earnings. He also “kidnaps” the surviving son of the drug dealers.

The task force members begin to solve the mystery of the boy, and while doing so, they uncover a local drug-dealing ring that’s been in disarray since Robbie took the duffel bag with pure fentanyl. As Robbie and his partner Cliff try their best to sell the drugs and escape with their families, they will face the clever FBI force, but also the leaders of The Dark Hearts, which will do anything possible to establish control, regardless of the consequences.

In Task Episode 6, Robbie has the upper hand. He has forgiven Tom Brandis, and has let him go as he prepares to land a final blow to The Dark Hearts, who are led by Perry and Jayson. His only condition for letting the FBI agent go is that Maeve, his niece and his children’s caretaker, will be protected. However, Tom Brandis still goes after him, and he’s joined by Stover, Clinton, and Grasso. By this point, it has already been revealed to viewers that Grasso is an informant for The Dark Hearts (that’s two for two for Fabien Frankel, the actor playing Grasso, who also plays a man of questionable morals in House of the Dragon).

When Jayson starts shooting, chaos ensues. Tom and Robbie team up again to fight against Perry and Jayson, but eventually, Jayson and Robbie get into a brutal fight before Tom can reach them in the deep woods. Jayson fatally stabs Robbie and runs away, and the wounded man is taken by Tom. Unfortunately, Robbie dies in Tom’s arms before they can reach the hospital.

The other members of the task force are in a showdown with the other gang members from The Dark Hearts. Grasso is between sides when he shoots his gun too close to Lizzie’s ear, and she suffers hearing loss. Unable to listen to Grasso’s advice, she runs away. The problem is that Grasso also lets Perry and Jayson escape, as per their initial agreement. When Lizzie reaches the bridge and tries to get something out of the car, she’s unable to hear a roaring truck coming for her. When she finally looks back, she sees Perry and Jayson riding the vehicle that will eventually collide with her and kill her. The agent also passes away from her wounds in the arms of the one agent who she bonded with, and who actually betrayed his team.

The final moments in the episode see Tom hearing the news that his team is being investigated because Internal Affairs suspects that Grasso may be an informant. When the leader visits the younger agent, he doesn’t get a confession out of him, but swears he’ll be “coming.” Tom decides to reach out to Clinton, who decides to help him uncover the monster that is their partner.

Can the ‘Task’ Finale Live Up to the Hype?

Task faces a difficult turn for its last episode, as traditionally, most series leave the best for last. Character deaths, major reveals, and showdowns, are almost always part of the series finale. In the case of Task, this was all covered in Episode 6, leaving viewers with a sour aftertaste that perhaps justice will prevail, but it’ll be too late.

Lizzie Stover and Robbie Prendergrast were not equally important to the show’s plot, but they were truly compelling in the hands of performers Alison Oliver and Tom Pelphrey, respectively. They will be missed during the finale, and at least, one of them will remain relevant until the ending. Apparently, Robbie’s arc has come to a landing, after Maeve receives a lot of money, courtesy of his clever vision to sell the drugs before. But Lizzie? Episode 7 should be all about Brandis and Clinton avenging her death.

Task Episode 7 could be a revenge story. Brandis’ pursuit of justice, by chasing down the man guilty of a loyal agent’s murder. Whether this leads to Perry or Jayson, it’s almost irrelevant, as going after Grasso seems to be the dramatic accelerant that the show needs to stick the landing. Besides, it’s fair to say that Grasso has become one of the most despised TV characters of 2025, right?
