After years of speculation, Sony Pictures finally announced the title of Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man movie at CinemaCon: Spider-Man: Brand New Day. From the reveal that Deadpool 3 was Deadpool & Wolverine during its Super Bowl spot or holding out for four months before it hit theaters to reveal the title Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios knows that their title reveals are headline-making news in their own right and can lead to a lot of speculation. However, the title Spider-Man: Brand New Day was likely to have some fans worried, given the history of the comic book storyline and what it is tied into.
While it could have been worse (thankfully, they have not announced Spider-Man: Clone Saga), Brand New Day is a title that will raise some alarm bells. Spider-Man: Brand New Days‘ comic book inspiration fits the broad strokes where the MCU left Peter Parker following Spider-Man: No Way Home. With Marvel’s history of grabbing eye-catching titles but essentially not adapting the original story or making significant alterations, the title for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a meta-title, similar to Spider-Man: Homecoming being both a reference to a high school homecoming dance and his return to the Marvel Universe. Here is what the title Spider-Man: Brand New Day means for the MCU and what it means for the film and the franchise’s future.

‘Brand New Day’ Marvel Comics History
Spider-Man: Brand New Day draws its title from the Dan Slott, Marc Guggenheim, Bob Gale, and Zeb Wells run on The Amazing Spider-Man comics. The banner ‘Brand New Day’ was only used for The Amazing Spider-Man #546-564 but is often meant to reference the entire 102-issue run of stories from The Amazing Spider-Man #546-647 as well as multiple tie-ins and one-shots that were published from January 2008 to November 2010.
Brand New Day gets its start from the infamous and widely hated “One More Day” storyline, which saw Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson give up their marriage to the demon Mephisto to save Aunt May’s life after she was shot in the aftermath of Peter Parker revealing his identity during the Civil War comic. “One More Day” was done by Marvel editorial to not only make Peter Parker’s identity a secret but to get rid of the marriage between him and Mary Jane Watson and return Peter Parker to a bachelor as they thought that made him more relatable and that being married “aged” the character. This is still controversial to this day, and now Ultimate Spider-Man sees Peter Parker and Mary Jane happily married while the main 616 counterparts are still not together, and she was recently revealed to be Venom, but we digress.

How ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s Ending Sets Up Season 2
Despite not having an after-credit scene, ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ has plenty of twists setting up Season 2.
Brand New Day was a new jumping-on point for fans (and for others, a jumping-off point they have never come back from) that explored this new return to the classic status quo for Spider-Man, which saw Peter Parker single and navigating being a young adult. His relationship with Mary Jane is revealed to have still happened, but instead of being married, they just moved in together but have since broken up. It returned him to the mechanical web shooters after he was given organic webbing to align the character more with the then-popular Tobey Maguire movies.
The comic revived Peter Parker’s friend Harry Osborn from the dead and introduced plenty of new characters that have since become part of the Spider-Man mythology, like the villain Martin Lee / Mister Negative and Detective Yuri Watanabe, who fans now know from the Playstation Spider-Man games. It also introduced new supporting characters like Charlie Cooper and Lily Hollister, two characters that Sadie Sink could be playing in the film adaptation.
While Brand New Day is widely associated with the terrible “One More Day,” the critical reaction to the storyline has generally been more positive. While some were rightfully upset at how the story was set up, the comics of Brand New Day felt like classic Spider-Man, and Marvel’s willingness to introduce new supporting characters and villains made the Spider-Man comic feel fresh. This soft relaunch of the Spider-Man title is likely Marvel’s main inspiration for their fourth Spider-Man film and less an intent of adapting the particular storyline.
Marvel Doesn’t Adapt Comics One-to-One
At this point, Marvel fans should know not to expect a one-to-one translation of comics when Marvel announces a title for a film that shares that of a popular comic. When Marvel Studios announced Avengers: Age of Ultron, writer and director Joss Whedon quickly pointed out that it would largely be an original story and share none of the story beats from the 2013 comic series of the same name. Avengers: Infinity War takes the name of the third entry in the “Infinity” trilogy of comics from the 1990s but only adapts the name, as the story is a combination of The Infinity Gauntlet, The Thanos Quest, and 2013’s Infinity.
Marvel Studios likes to pick titles that pull from popular comics and act as meta-jokes. The most recent example is Daredevil: Born Again. Despite sharing a name with the highly acclaimed comic arc Born Again by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, the recent Disney+ series pulls more from the Charles Shoule, Chip Zdarsky, and Brian Michael Bendis runs. Born Again was already adapted in Daredevil Season 3, but Marvel used the popular and proactive title as a statement of intent since it was a continuation/revival of the canceled Daredevil series. It also fits the story they wanted to tell of Matt Murdock being drawn to become Daredevil again. While not a direct adaptation, the title fits their unique story for Daredevil.
With this knowledge, it is clear to see how and why Sony and Marvel landed on Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The overall themes and mission statement of Spider-Man: Brand New Day as a comic and film will be the same, but the story will largely be different. It will follow the new status quo that Spider-Man: No Way Home established, of Peter Parker alone with no Avengers assistance (that we know of) and meeting a new group of people like in the comics, but with its own original take.
Why ‘Brand New Day’ Is the Title for ‘Spider-Man 4’
Spider-Man: Brand New Day as a comic makes so much sense as the starting point for the direction of the MCU’s Spider-Man following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the Brand New Day comic, everyone remembers that Spider-Man unmasked himself, but nobody can remember who exactly it was, which fits perfectly with how Doctor Strange’s spell worked to make everyone forget Peter Parker existed. The MCU still knows that Spider-Man exists but doesn’t know who is underneath the mask.
Another crucial element from Spider-Man: Brand New Day that the film and comic will likely have in common is Peter Parker dealing with the aftermath of losing MJ and moving forward on a new path. Spider-Man: No Way Home featured a tragic ending to the love story between Peter Parker and Michelle Jones Watson (Zendaya), but one that hinted at a hopeful reunion someday. With a memory mind wipe that makes everyone forget Peter Parker is Spider-Man and his relationship with MJ is no more, Spider-Man: No Way Home is effectively a loose (and better) adaptation of “One More Day.“ This perfectly sets up the follow-up film to be Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which can now act as a soft-reboot for the MCU Spider-Man, with new villains, friends, and maybe a love interest.
How Marvel Will Likely Change ‘Brand New Day’
With Sadie Sink already confirmed to join the Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast, there has been rampant speculation about who she will play. Many theorize she might play the X-Men Jean Grey or the Spider-Man affiliate mutant Firestar as a set-up for the MCU’s X-Men. Yet, with Avengers: Doomsday featuring a returning 20th Century Fox X-Men cast and that film opening two months before Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel Studios might not feature two different X-Men incarnations.
Sink could be playing Carlie Cooper, one of Peter’s first major love interests in the Brand New Day storyline. She could also play Lilly Hollister, aka the villain Menace, who was introduced as Carlie’s friend and Harry Osborn’s girlfriend. Rumors have circulated that Spider-Man 4 will feature a female villain, and Lilly Hollister could either appear as the Green Goblin like Malice or the character’s new Black Cat-inspired anti-hero Queen Cat.

Why Are There So Many X-Men in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’? I Think I Know the Answer
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ features many X-Men characters, suggesting the MCU will merge two iconic Marvel storylines for the team-up movie.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day might also illuminate Avengers: Doomsday, mainly why Tom Holland’s name was not in the cast announcement. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day opening almost three months after Avengers: Doomsday, there is a chance that Marvel Studios might be using the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man similar to Ant-Man, who skipped Avengers: Infinity War due to Ant-Man and the Wasp opening three months later but getting a crucial role in Avengers: Endgame. Like Ant-Man and the Wasp taking place shortly before Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: Brand New Day might occur shortly before or during Avengers: Doomsday. This could explain his absence before he gets a more significant role in Avengers: Secret Wars.
This also suggests that Spider-Man: Brand New Day might not be another multiverse-level film like some rumors indicated, but a smaller-scale, street-level film. This could open the door for Spider-Man to team up with the likes of Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones, or even Moon Knight, since he was not present in the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement. Brand New Day comes with the implication of a return to form. After the massive scale of Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home, along with Spidey’s two Avengers film appearances, Brand New Day could give fans a return to the Sam Raimi-level storytelling that has been missing from the franchise for years.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is one of the most anticipated films of 2026. Now that the title is confirmed, all eyes will be on who is cast in the fourth MCU Spider-Man film. Even though the movie’s title was answered, more questions were raised. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will release in theaters on July 31, 2026.
