‘Bluey’ Movie Set for Theatrical Release in 2027

Bluey, the Australian animated series that has captivated the world, is officially heading to the big screen in 2027. Debuting in 2018 on ABC Kids, the series created by Joe Brumm quickly became a fan favorite overseas, and in recent years, has managed to permeate pop culture in North America. These days, it seems you can’t go anywhere without seeing everyone’s beloved Blue Heeler puppy on t-shirts, cups, and anything else marketed to kids.

Per Deadline, the Bluey movie is all thanks to Disney and BBC Studios, who inked a deal for a big screen release that sees Disney maintain global theatrical and streaming rights. Brumm will write and direct the feature film, which is expected to debut in 2027 and stream later on Disney+. “I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie,” Brumm said in a statement released today. “I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.”

There are currently 154 episodes of Bluey in the can across three seasons, and though Brumm will step away from the show to focus on the movie, the series will continue on without his presence. Plot details remain under wraps for now, but Brumm also mentioned that it’s an old idea that resurfaced in his mind while he was busy elsewhere.

“After some time spent away from the series, working on another project, an old idea resurfaced and before I knew it, I’d written a Bluey feature script that I really love. Fast-forward through a tonne of contracting and we’re about to embark on making an animated Bluey movie.

“I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last. This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such.”

‘Bluey’ Is the Most-Watched TV Show in the United States

Bluey follows the exploits of the titular six-year-old pup and her family as they navigate the world in an easy-to-follow manner that kids can enjoy. The series has long been lauded by critics and parents for its animation, humor, and the positive way it portrays the family unit, with Bandit – Bluey’s dad – not afraid to do housework and play with his kids. Imagine that? A father that actually cares. What a novel concept.

It has also been the recipient of numerous awards over the years, including a Peabody in 2024, as well as several Kidscreen Awards in 2021 and 2023. Since its debut on Disney+ in 2020, Bluey has consistently been one of its highest ranking shows in terms of viewership, and as of September, it was the most-watched TV show in the United States in 2024 with a massive 35 billion minutes seen by fans.

Needless to say, we expect the Bluey movie to be a big hit when it premieres in 2027, as not only has the series managed to capture the imagination of kids, but adults who are invested in the beloved characters as well.
