‘Big Little Lies’ Fans Don’t Want to Miss Peacock’ ‘All Her Fault’

It’s difficult to identify the one thing that Big Little Lies did that no other mystery series had done before it. We were given a compelling mystery that slowly unraveled, sharing more insight into the crime a week at a time, with that story being based on the novel by Liane Moriarty. There was a lot of on-screen talent, thanks to the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, and the entire supporting cast. The series also looked fantastic, thanks to the late filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée. While the first season understandably felt like it captured lightning in a bottle, there have since been a handful of series that deliver a similar magic.

Over the last decade, we’ve seen a surge in thrillers that don’t rely on bombast and bloodshed, but instead intrigue us with how innocuous they seem. These domestic thrillers are less about outlandish scenarios and are more about the things you believe could happen behind the closed doors of your own neighborhood. That inherent curiosity, combined with the number of true-crime documentaries that blur the line between reality and fiction, is what makes Peacock’s All Her Fault so gripping.

Also, similar to Big Little Lies, the first season of All Her Fault is an easily consumable eight episodes that tells a complete story, despite leaving some lingering questions.

Every Parent’s Worst Nightmare

Based on the Andrea Mara novel of the same name, All Her Fault does what all effective domestic thrillers do: takes a seemingly mundane, daily activity and, with one slight deviation, ignites a downward spiral of anxiety. Affluent Marissa Irvine (Sarah Snook) sets off to pick up her young son from a playdate with a new schoolmate, though when she arrives, the woman who answers the door not only denies knowing who the young boy is, but also has no idea who Marissa is.

From there, Marissa contacts the authorities and those with whom she thought she was closest, only for the investigation to – as one can imagine – descend into something far darker and more twisted than originally imagined.

Like Big Little Lies, what makes All Her Fault work is the impressive on-screen talent, as the series earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television, with Snook herself also being nominated. Also starring in the series are Dakota Fanning, Jake Lacy, Jay Ellis, and Michael Peña.

‘All Her Fault’ Could Still Get a Season 2

When a series earns critical acclaim, awards recognition, and buzz from audiences, it’s hard to call it quits entirely. With Big Little Lies, Season 1 wrapped up the events of the book, and without an official sequel, Liane Moriarty collaborated with David E. Kelley to develop a sophomore season. While that second season still fared well with critics and scored coveted awards nominations, there was still a somewhat significant dip in enthusiasm.

The first season of All Her Fault similarly wrapped up the events of the novel, so while there’s not any established narrative that could organically extend, showrunner Megan Gallagher previously shared with Collider of a Season 2:

“Wouldn’t that be nice? I would be up for that, so we’ll see. For now, I have to give you the kind of stock answer and say that we’re excited for everybody to dive into Season 1.”

While some fans would enjoy a Season 2, on the other hand, knowing that the entire storyline is wrapped up in these eight episodes is satisfying in its own right.
