Beloved Indie Game Among Us Is Getting A Full 3D Version, Releasing Soon

Among Us is getting a new look for 2025, bringing the 3-dimensional style of the VR version to non-VR players. The extremely popular indie darling was released in 2018 but rose to internet fame around 2020 and 2021, when the world was in need of online social entertainment. A Virtual Reality version arrived in 2022 for PC VR devices and the PlayStation VR, to general success.

The VR version of Among Us will now be making its way into the hands of non-VR gamers, in a collaboration with InnerSloth and Schell Games. Among Us 3D will arrive on Steam on May 6, giving players who don’t use VR a chance to experience the popular game in its glorious three-dimensional iteration.

Among Us took the world by storm in 2020 thanks in equal parts to YouTubers and Twitch streamers bringing it into the mainstream, and the need of people at the time to connect in new ways. In the game, groups of 4-15 players must uncover the impostor among them as the team prepares a spaceship for takeoff. Between each round, players have a chance to vote on who they think is the impostor.

The game’s iconic and adorable style has made a lasting mark on pop culture, as has the vocabulary that arose from playing the game, like the still-used “Sus” to describe something suspicious. Among Us managed to blend teamwork and betrayal into fun, bite-sized sessions, catapaulting it to fame.

At this moment, Among Us 3D is only announced for the PC, despite the original Among Us being a mobile title. Although a mobile release of the 3D version isn’t completely out of the question, YouTube user Starodubchik points out this is extremely unlikely, stating “If such a game comes out on the phone, I’ll eat a slipper.“

The heyday of Among Us might be over now, but it might be time to make a return to the title. According to Prioridata, the game reached a peak player count of over 163 million monthly players by 2021. The title’s all-time peak concurrent player count on Steam was 438,524 players, compared to the much lower but still decent 4,000 active players that it reaches these days.
