Beast Of Reincarnation – Release Window, Gameplay, & Story Details

Game Freak has finally revealed a series of major details about Beast of Reincarnation, the next game by the Pokémon dev. Appearing yesterday as part of the Xbox Developer Direct, Game Freak gave us an in-depth look at the gameplay and story.

They also announced a release window for Beast of Reincarnation, which is due out later this year. Here’s everything we know about Game Freak’s next major release post-Developer Direct.

Beast of Reincarnation is now set for a summer 2026 release, as announced at the end of its segment on the Developer Direct. A more concrete release date is likely to be announced closer to launch, but for now, we’ll have to content ourselves with a seasonal window.

Beast Of Reincarnation Gameplay

A Pokémon-Inspired Action RPG

During the livestream, Game Freak developers spoke about how Beast of Reincarnation draws from its flagship series Pokémon. Of course, mainline Pokémon is a turn-based creature-collecting RPG, where Beast of Reincarnation is an action game. What the two have in common, though, is their focus on the relationships between humans and animals.

In Beast of Reincarnation, you’ll play as Emma, a cursed warrior (more on that below) who’s always accompanied by a loyal white wolf named Koo. You’ll control both characters at once: Emma executes fast-paced combos with her katana while issuing commands to Koo.

There certainly seems to be a little Soulslike DNA in Beast of Reincarnation. The bulk of the enemies we’ve seen so far are huge, mutated monsters with massive, devastating attack patterns. The combat system includes a parry mechanic; when Emma successfully deflects incoming attacks, she accrues points that she can expend on commands for Koo.

According to Game Freak’s Kota Furushima, writing in Xbox Wire, “We placed a high priority on this sense of ‘tempo.’ Rather than forcing players to rely solely on split-second reflexes in high-pressure situations, we wanted to create moments where you can pause, think carefully, and fight with the tactical mindset of a command-based RPG.”

Throughout the game, you’ll be able to customize Emma and Koo’s skillset with equippable accessories called Spirit Stones. Each character also has a separate skill tree with abilities meant to complement the other. Outside combat, Emma will have access to a variety of different traversal abilities (many of which can also be used to reposition in combat) that she’ll use to overcome platforming sections.

Beast Of Reincarnation Story Details

A Journey Through A Blighted World

Two giant walking robots tower over a grassy valley in Beast of Reincarnation.

Beast of Reincarnation has a post-apocalyptic setting, taking place in 4026 AD. The world is infested with a malignant plant species referred to simply as blight, which shows throughout the various environments seen in the trailer: overgrown infrastructure, crumbling ruins, et cetera.

Emma is afflicted with blight, which grants her unique plant-related abilities, but also forces her into exile. She lives in solitude in the woods, where she’s expected to hunt down blighted creatures called malefacts to cut off the blight infestation.

That is, until she meets Koo, a malefact in the form of a white wolf. The two forge an unlikely bond, and travel westward together, defeating Nushi — giant malefacts from which blighted forests grow. At length, they aim complete Emma’s ultimate mission: to defeat the Beat of Reincarnation, a mysterious entity believed to be the source of the blight.

Per Xbox Wire, one of the game’s major themes is the keeping of secrets. Both Emma and Koo hide “heavy secrets” from one another as they journey, and many of the allies they encounter along the way are similarly hiding precious tidbits of information. As you explore and quest, you’ll likely uncover many such secrets and learn more about the mysterious world and those who live in it.

Furushima ends his Xbox Wire article on Beast of Reincarnation with a warning: “Never look up at the sky. An ancient legend of this world warns that ‘something’ is floating up there. But please… for your own sake, do not try to see it yourselves.”

Sounds like another secret waiting to be discovered; sorry to say it, but I’ll definitely be pointing my camera skywards as soon as I get the opportunity.

Like all the games shown at the Developer Direct, including Forza Horizon 6 and the Fable reboot, Beast of Reincarnation will be available on Game Pass day-one. You’ll need to be subscribed to the Ultimate tier to access day-one releases.

It’ll also be playable via Xbox Play Anywhere, Microsoft’s cloud streaming service. This way, you’ll be able to play Beast of Reincarnation without downloading it to your hard drive, or take it on the go via the Xbox mobile app.

For now, that’s what we know about Game Freak’s newest game. Expect more details about Beast of Reincarnation to come between now and its summer 2026 launch.
