Some interesting comments from this BBC Sport pundit on Newcastle United.
Chris Sutton speaking ahead of Saturday’s match.
Newcastle United facing Brentford at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United team hoping to bounce back to winning form, after losing two games in a row for the first time in nine months.
United also knowing that a win would take them level on points with Brentford, with a win by a three goal margin taking the Magpies above the Bees.
Chris Sutton saying about Newcastle United ahead of the match at SJP; “You just wonder how much Newcastle have got left in the tank after their Carabao Cup semi-final defeat at Manchester City on Wednesday. The Magpies have a few injuries to contend with too, with Anthony Gordon the latest player to be sidelined, so they will have to dig deep and hope Bruno Guimaraes is back fit in time for this game.”
Bruno Guimaraes was one of six players Newcastle United were missing on Wednesday in terms of potential starters, with then Gordon forced off.
Hopefully Bruno back today because he is such a key player and leader.
As for the opposition today, the BBC Sport pundit declaring: “Brentford got one heck of a win last time out at Villa, and their manager Keith Andrews deserves a lot of credit for getting that result despite being down to 10 men for the entire second half. The Bees are always so well organised at the back, and how Eddie Howe’s side try to break them down will be the key to this one.”
Brentford have had a few decent away results recently but as usual, their season has been built on the home form.
Only three PL teams have won more at home than Brentford’s seven (same as NUFC), but only Burnley and Wolves have lost more away games than the eight the Bees have lost.
Chris Sutton when looking at the striking options…“As good as Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade is with his back to goal, he doesn’t run in behind. Doing that, and attacking with pace, is how Eddie Howe’s side look the most dangerous – Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga will have to do that here, and I fancy Yoane Wissa to score against his former club.”
The BBC Sport pundit predicts a 3-1 home win and Brentford have only ever won once on Tyneside, their first ever visit to St James’ Park in 1934.
More recently, Eddie Howe’s NUFC have won their last four at home against Brentford and before losing away to them in November 2025, it had been seven wins from eight games against Brentford, home and away.
A very much needed three points today for Newcastle United and like Chris Sutton, I think Eddie Howe’s team will get them.
