BBC Sport comments from ‘neutrals’ on Newcastle United after defeating Bournemouth on penalties

BBC Sport comments from ‘neutrals’ on Newcastle United after defeating Bournemouth on penalties

Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United winning 7-6 on penalties against Bournemouth, the game having ended 2-2 in normal time and then 3-3 after extra time.

The comments from neutrals especially telling…

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion the politics (almost!) entirely absent, concentrating instead on matters on the pitch…

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, some Bournemouth fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing (as well as Sunderland fans pretending to be NUFC fans…):

‘Bournemouth fan here, I know we lost on penalties but can I say how well my team have adjusted to losing all our best players and still taking on a decent Newcastle side and providing a great watch for the neutral’

‘As a Newcastle fan, I am ageing at least 5 years per game, will be 120 by the end of the season.’

‘Fantastic effort by the cherries with a depleted squad. Great FA cup spectacle…big congrats to Newcastle.’

‘Since they won the lottery with sportswashing money Newcastle have really turned into an odious football club. And how apt they have three of the biggest cheats in the game in Guimares , Joelinton and Gordon.

Unlucky Bournemouth, winning today would have done football a favour’

‘Miley is already an immense player. I’d also like to see Alex Scott in the Black n White.’

‘I feel we were lucky to win that. Bournemouth could have won it 3-5!

What we learned today:

– Botman has lost half a yard

– We need a deputy for Joelinton who busts a gut to defend (Willock looks disinterested)

– Trippier’s legs have gone

– Wissa needs to improve his finishing. He didn’t get much service but should have buried his 2.

– Gordon is approaching his best again

– Barnes saves us AGAIN.’

‘Harvey Barnes is almost single-handedly keeping Newcastle United afloat these days!’

‘Newcastle just have to hope they don’t draw the Macc Lads in the next round.’

‘Might be a blessing in disguise for the Cherries. They are light on squad strength compared to last season and need to concentrate on the EPL.’

‘Can the will power and confidence see them put in a good performance on Tuesday if the legs won’t?

We’ll see …. Here’s hoping.’

‘One of these days, this Newcastle team will learn how to defend a lead!’

‘The magic of the FA Cup is back again.’

‘Can’t wait to find out what it’s like to win without the drama….’

‘It might be entertaining for the neutrals but it’s hell for their own fans!’

‘Nobody deserved to lose that, but glad we got through. Hopefully Livramento isn’t out for weeks. It’s worrying that it’s 10 January and we’ve only four fit defenders with no sign of bids or loans. If we finish the window without reinforcements, we’ll only have ourselves to blame when injuries and fatigue hit. The board must act now, because we’re running on fumes.’

‘The lads are tired, and it is showing. They gave everything once again on the pitch. Eddie should be as proud as the fans are. Onwards and forward. Get a couple of players across the threshold.’

‘They were tired – but not a tired as Leeds and Bournemouth. Says a lot about Eddie and the coaching staff !!’

‘Brilliant match. Some of these FA cup matches have been superb and no VAR to break the flow of the game or the constant useless 5 min checks for every goal’

‘Cherries fan here proud of my team. They gave everything and were out on their feet at the end. Such a massive effort with the team down to bare bones and young lad having to come on to keep 11 in the pitch. Neither side deserved to lose that. Should have been a replay at Vitality next Tuesday night.’

‘Always look out for Bournemouth and their results, they just need to buy a few defenders to steady the ship, going forward they always create and score but they look fragile at the back, and I’d give Forster a go between the sticks, they’ll be ok and stay up,but they need to splash a bit of money and shore up the defense.’

‘Man City getting a nice warmup and confidence booster while Newcastle run themselves absolutely ragged again. Tuesday will be an absolute trouncing for Newcastle.’

‘Im sorry, but theres no delight in getting through on luck. The competition is just going to get harder. Home advantage against Bournemouth, who we should really beat. Why Eddie can you not beat Bournemouth? They are not Barcelona. Bournemouth were far better than us. Surprising given the players we have. For christ sake Eddie, stop giving Bournemouth too much respect!’

‘Unlucky Bournemouth. Newcastle lucky twice in a week.’

‘”Lucky” says the fan of a team that won a league game without having a shot on target..!’

‘Bournemouth won that really.’

‘They lost

They are out of the cup

They won’t be in the draw for the next round

That’s reality.’

‘Flukecastle United.’

‘Ramsdale didnt ever get close to saving a pen at Arsenal, guess they have all come at once .’

‘Is a pattern emerging? Twice in a week Newcastle behind in added time and get penalty. Are officials caving in to pressure from home crowd?’

‘look at both penalty awards and give your head a wobble.’
