BBC pundit picks Newcastle’s unsung hero, ‘magic man’ and one strange selection

Our strong form at St James’ Park continued on Saturday, as we made it six wins from our last seven at home via a 3-0 win over Ipswich Town.

It was a dominant display in the end, with the away side’s resistance breaking after a first-half red card and Alexander Isak penalty that set us up for a comfortable afternoon.

The win sends us back up to third, above Man City and five clear of Aston Villa, boosting our hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. But how did the media rate our performance and who were the standout players?

In his latest Premier League Team of the Week piece for BBC Sport, Troy Deeney has selected three Mags; Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.

Trippier has been our unsung hero in recent months, rolling back the year at 34 and delivering two quality assists on Saturday, while Dan Burn was dominant at both ends; taking care of the powerful Liam Delap before heading in his first league goal of the season to make it 2-0.

Isak got on the scoresheet, moving up to 22 goals behind only Mo Salah, but it’s a surprise to see him in Deeney’s TOTW. The Swede still found a way from the spot, but he missed two big chances he would’ve buried on a good day and has been a level or two below his unstoppable best in recent weeks. Yet, he was the only striker selected in Deeney’s XI!

Here’s what the former Watford captain had to say on all three, describing Burn as our ‘magic man’ as his fairytale start to 2025 goes from strength to strength:

Kieran Trippier (Newcastle): “He was excellent, assured, calm and quality on the ball. At the ripe old age of 34, he is still showing that it’s necessary to have experience in the side. He helped Newcastle to manage the game when they went 2-0 up. He showed quality for two of the goals – standing a cross up for Dan Burn and also his corner for Newcastle’s third was magnificent.”

Dan Burn (Newcastle): “Burn is the magic man of Newcastle, he just keeps on going. Every time you think his story is doing to drop off, he just keeps getting better. Burn had a real ding-dong with Liam Delap but had the Ipswich forward in his back pocket and then also scored a goal.”

Alexander Isak (Newcastle): “He could have scored four on the day. His movement and link-up play is excellent. This guy is the complete striker in world football.”

See Deeney’s full Team of the Week below, which was dominated by Newcastle, Wolves, Brighton and Liverpool stars.

Toon targets Matheus Cunha and Antoine Semenyo both made it after goals over the weekend, with Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez also included after a clean sheet that helped Chelsea edge out Everton 1-0 on Saturday.
