Barcelona set to battle Real Madrid to sign 15-year-old Spanish talent

Spain has always been a hotbed for some of the most exciting talents in world football, even if we look past big clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Keeping that in mind, Sergio Merino is fast-becoming the latest Spanish sensation, who does not hail from either Barcelona or Madrid, but is attracting the attention of both clubs.

Currently plying his trade for Real Valladolid’s youth team, Merino is a 15-year-old midfielder who is regarded as one of the top talents in the country.

Barcelona and Real Madrid interested

As reported by AS, both Barcelona and Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on the 15-year-old midfielder.

Merino is set to turn 16 in May, the age at which he will finally be eligible to sign his first professional contract.

The player is currently represented by the agency Roof, which holds strong ties to the youth academies of both Barça and Madrid.

While the youngster is currently happy developing in Valladolid, the club are aware that the big clubs are lurking and have already seen him play live on multiple occasions.

Merino has already made history as the youngest player to debut in the Division de Honor with Real Valladolid in recent years.

Described as an energetic box-to-box midfielder, his versatility allows him to be effective in various phases of the game.

Though he often operates in a double pivot, his intensity and wide range of movement allow him to contribute significantly to the attack, making him an ideal prospect for Barcelona.

The Catalans have developed some of the finest young talents in La Masia in recent years. But it is the non-La Masia prodigy Pedri who is currently the most important midfielder in the team. There is no reason why the same cannot happen with the highly talented Merino.
