Barcelona identify Manchester City star as alternative to top attacking target – report

FC Barcelona have identified the signing of a new centre-forward as a top priority for the summer transfer window.

With Robert Lewandowski expected to depart once his contract expires at the end of the season, the Blaugrana are working to find a suitable replacement for the veteran Pole.

Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid has emerged as the top target for the position, but a move for the Argentine international will not be easy to pull off.

Omar Marmoush: Plan B?

As such, SPORT reports that alternatives to Alvarez are being assessed by Barcelona, and one name that appeals strongly is Omar Marmoush of Manchester City.

Barça believe that they will have the financial capacity to undertake a major operation in the summer. However, they are unwilling to pay excessive sums, something that could occur in the case of Alvarez, with Atletico likely to command a fee of around €200 million.

Given the situation, the Catalans want to be prepared, and Marmoush is seen as a strong fit into Hansi Flick’s system.

Barcelona followed the 27-year-old striker closely during his time at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he became one of the Bundesliga’s leading scorers.

He had been considered as a potential option if Robert Lewandowski were to leave after his third season, but the Egyptian moved to Manchester City in January 2025 for €75 million.

Despite arriving with high expectations, Marmoush has found it difficult to secure a regular starting place, with Erling Haaland considered untouchable. He has delivered more often than not when coming off the bench, but has grown concerned about his limited opportunities.

There was already speculation about a possible departure in January, but nothing came of it. He could, however, be made available in the summer, with the report even suggesting that Man City could be willing to accept a fee lower than the €75 million they paid for him.

Marmoush is appreciated by Flick, who has received positive sporting and professional reports from the striker’s time in the Bundesliga.

Barcelona, too, admire the Egyptian international and are staying fully informed about his situation, despite his modest numbers this season.
