Barcelona’s Director of Football, Deco, in an exclusive discussion with SPORT, has provided insights into the club’s current situation.
With the season entering a crucial phase, Barcelona are in a strong position to compete for titles. However, while the focus remains on the ongoing campaign, Deco must also plan ahead and start shaping the squad for next season.
One of the key topics of discussion has been the potential addition of Jonathan Tah to Barcelona’s defence.
The German centre-back, currently playing for Bayer Leverkusen, is nearing the end of his contract and his situation has been widely discussed.
While Barcelona remain interested in securing his services, the club’s plans depend heavily on the future of Ronald Araujo. The Uruguayan defender’s continuity at the club plays a major role in determining whether the pursuit of Tah will materialise.
Deco’s insights
At present, Barcelona’s defensive structure is still under evaluation. The club must carefully assess their needs after the transfer window, considering the challenges they have faced and those that might arise in the future.
“What we need to do now is to calm down a bit after the market. We have to keep our feet on the ground, analyze what happened to us, the difficulties we have had, whether we are going to have them in the future or not, and what we can do,” he said.
Eric Garcia’s situation is another variable that could influence the final decision regarding defensive reinforcements. If Barcelona find themselves adequately covered in central defence, bringing in another centre-back could prove difficult.
“We know the team we have today, there are many things that change, such as the case of Eric Garcia. There are many variables that we do not control, but the idea is there and we know what we want.
“If the question refers to whether we have four central defenders, it will be difficult to bring in something, that’s true,” he noted.
What’s the latest with Tah?
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the club’s plans, it has been reported that Tah has made up his mind about joining Barcelona.
The defender is expected to complete a Bosman transfer in the summer of 2025, which is a significant boost for the Catalan club.
A crucial meeting is scheduled between Barcelona’s representatives and Tah’s camp. This discussion will be key in finalising the transfer and ensuring all parties are aligned before moving forward.
However, before Barcelona can complete the signing, they must resolve certain internal matters, which is to streamline their defensive structure.
