Barcelona could earn bonus revenue from ex-flop due to special clause in sale agreement

Barcelona could earn bonus revenue from ex-flop due to special clause in sale agreement

The Vitor Roque operation at Barcelona was, by most measures, a failure. The Brazilian striker arrived as a rising star but never acclimatised and was barely used by Xavi Hernandez, and was not in Hansi Flick’s plans.

He was eventually sold back to Palmeiras in a complex deal that saw Barça lose around €4.5 million, not including salary.

However, the club expects some bonus revenue from the Roque deal thanks to a few clauses that were incorporated in the original deal.

According to SPORT, the first of these payments could arrive as soon as November 29. Since returning to Brazil, Roque has become a star for Palmeiras, scoring 17 goals and leading his team to the Copa Libertadores final against Flamengo.

As part of the sale, Barça negotiated €5 million in variables on top of the €25.5 million fee. While most are difficult to achieve, with Barcelona already losing out €2 million due to Palmeiras’ exit from the Club World Cup, a key clause is tied to winning major trophies.

If Palmeiras wins the Libertadores, Barça is set to receive a bonus of close to €1 million.

Beyond that immediate bonus, the club are also banking on a much larger, long-term payday. Indeed, the club had notably retained 20% of Vitor Roque’s future sale rights.

Barcelona are convinced that the striker will eventually star in another high-profile transfer. Several Premier League clubs are already closely monitoring his stellar form, and while a move isn’t expected in January, it’s seen as an inevitability.

Roque, therefore, could be poised to join a long list of former Barcelona players, which the club have utilised to make additional revenue, simply by adding various clauses.
