After months of speculation, Mark Ruffalo is officially set to reprise his role as Bruce Banner / The Hulk in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With less than a year standing between its release, the latest spider-sequel has begun filming, and fans have already given fans a tease of Spider-Man’s new suit. While plot details have been scarce for the most part, it was already known that Jon Bernthal would appear as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. Now it looks like Spider-Man is getting more MCU support, including one of Marvel’s favorite heroes — as well as a villain fans have been waiting nearly a decade to see.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the news of Ruffalo’s return for Spider-Man: Brand New Days, which arrives 14 years after Ruffalo made his MCU debut in 2012’s The Avengers. The trade also confirmed that Michael Mando would reprise his role as Mac Gargan / Scorpion, who was teased in a post-credit scene following Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The Hulk and Scorpion’s Role in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Ruffalo’s Hulk was last seen in 2022’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. More recently, many noted that it seemed strange for the character to be absent from Captain America: Brave New World, considering it featured Thaddeus Ross as the President of the United States (and the Red Hulk), the Leader, and even the return of Liv Tyler as Betty Ross. The Hulk’s inclusion in Spider-Man: Brand New Day might explain why Rufallo hasn’t been confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Whatever ends up happening in Spider-Man: Brand New Day could keep the Hulk from being part of the Avengers in Doomsday, though if that’s the case, hopefully he’ll still appear in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Paying off the Scorpion tease nine years after Spider-Man: Homecoming shows that, just as with the Celestial island in Captain America: Brave New World or Avengers Tower in Thunderbolts*, it’s never too late for the MCU to resolve a long-dangling plot point. Yet it looks like Scorpion may not be the film’s primary antagonist, as recent set photos hint at the film featuring Mister Negative.
Spider-Man and the Hulk are two of Marvel’s most famous heroes; before the MCU, they were seen as the faces of the company alongside Wolverine. They are also both heroes that Marvel Studios doesn’t fully own, as Universal still has first dibs on any standalone Hulk film, and Sony holds the rights to the cinematic Spider-verse. Spider-Man: Brand New Day essentially gives Marvel the ability to not only make a Spider-Man film, but also a new Hulk movie. With the Hulk and Punisher joining the webhead, it appears Marvel and Sony are filling up Spider-Man: Brand New Day with enough MCU characters to make the film feel like just as much of an event picture as Spider-Man: No Way Home.
