I saw Avatar: Fire and Ash in James Cameron’s preferred format, but that doesn’t mean you have to. In an age when streaming continues to grow as the prevalent, easy-access market in the film industry, filmmakers like James Cameron and Christopher Nolan are encouraging cinematic experiences more and more. While it’s important to see movies the way the artists intended them to be viewed, it’s also important for moviegoers to save money where they can, meaning different cinematic formats will be preferred for different viewers.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to a Dolby 3D formatted screening of Avatar: Fire and Ash on December 1, where I experienced the film as Cameron intended it to be seen. On The Town with Matthew Belloni, Cameron explained that he’s divided between IMAX and Dolby formats, enjoying the latter as, despite Dolby offering a smaller screen, the brighter light levels are more satisfactory for the 3D experience. IMAX may have a bigger screen, but 3D movie viewing beckons the viewer to sit closer and “feel your field of view,” making the big screen less critical.
‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Offers an Immersive 3D Experience, But It’s Not For Everyone
The varying screen formats for Avatar: Fire and Ash are going to appeal to different audiences, particularly when it comes to 3D. As someone who wears glasses during movies, I find the additional 3D glasses to be frustrating to wear, so I’ll typically avoid the format altogether, preferring IMAX. Avatar movies are a rare exception, but then it comes down to price. Dolby Cinema is also exclusive to AMC theaters, so if you don’t have one in your area, that specific format won’t be an option.
Prices and options will vary based on location, and I’m undoubtedly at a financial disadvantage living in NYC. Here, tickets for a Dolby 3D film can cost around $30, a price I typically wouldn’t be willing to pay. With an AMC A-List membership, it’s no more expensive than a standard format film, making it worthwhile. If you are a passionate Avatar fan and have the option to do so, it’s worth supporting the production with the Dolby 3D experience, as the film offers plenty of action scenes to immerse oneself in.
Viewing formats can be confusing, as there are several types, and some are exclusive to different theater chains. There’s IMAX, which can be with Laser or analog film formats. Dolby Cinema is exclusive to AMC, and 4DX is exclusive to Regal. These are just examples, and they can be overwhelming without fully understanding them. Given that 3D is part of the advent of seeing an Avatar film, it can be worthwhile to do so, even if it’s not in a premium screen format. This is how James Cameron made his movies to be viewed, and he’s put notable attention into the details of the 3D depth. Check sites like Fandango, AMC, Regal, or your local theater to see what’s available.
