Atletico Madrid star emerges as a key option in Barcelona’s plan to replace 42-goal striker

Robert Lewandowski, who has endured an eventful few weeks, is expected to continue leading Barcelona’s attack next season.

The veteran forward is coming on the back of a season that saw him score 42 goals in all competitions, playing a key role in Barcelona’s domestic treble.

However, at 36, doubts are creeping in about his long-term output, especially given how his performances dissipated during the second half of last season.

Barcelona tracking Julian Alvarez as Lewandowski replacement

According to Diario SPORT, Barcelona are keeping close tabs on Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez as a potential long-term replacement for Lewandowski.

The Argentine forward left Manchester City in 2024 to join Atletico in a deal worth €75 million plus €15 million in add-ons.

Since then, Alvarez has become one of the standout attacking players in La Liga and is seen as a fitting heir to Lewandowski’s role at Barcelona.

Despite being under contract until 2030, Alvarez’s name has emerged as a serious candidate in Barcelona’s medium- and long-term transfer planning.

While Atletico Madrid are not expected to make negotiations easy, the striker’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, hinted at a potential move.

“It’s day-to-day at Atletico. We’ll see how the negotiations go. Football is ever-changing. They’ll have to communicate with the club, which will assess the situation, and then it will be a negotiation between the three parties,” he said recently.

The next season, therefore, could be critical for both Barcelona and Alvarez, who will be looking to produce another top season in order to attract the interest of top clubs across Europe, including Barcelona.
